In recent times, many studies related to the area history have already been going full-speed ahead, the trend of studies on the Japanese colonial period is changing. Out of the dichotomous study on colonial exploitation or resistance, there have been more increasing attention to pay to take a close look at those who was real colonial public's life at that time. During Japanese colonial rule, becoming an independent state and modernizing was the key issue to korean public, those who conceive this issues lead the social movement like a youth movement, a labor movement, a peasant movement in each region. The key issue is how can we conceptualize the leadership of this social movement on the colonial period. There are some people who have a various purpose to lead the social movement in Eonyang during colonial rule. Some of them had accept 'Cheondo-gyo' and participated in the social movements in the region. Among those regions, Eonyang was traditionally much influenced by Catholics and Buddhism, Cheondo-gyo had less power around the Gyeongsang-do because the missionary work of Cheondo-gyo had usually done in the area of northwest. But in 1910's the member of Cheondo-gyo party in Eonyang has emerged as a considerable force, actively participated in the social movements in the region. So far, most of studies was about the supreme religious body and the leadership. Recently there are some increasing studies about regional activity of Cheondo-gyo society, but those tend to be centered to some specific cases at a restrcited time so far. Some treated the activity of Cheondo-gyo society but too concentuated to the 'Cheondo-gyo' as a religion to see about the specialties as a region. There can be partly founded some contents of activities during Japanese colonial rule because the racial movement and the social movement of Cheondo-gyo society was related to the reality of colony and had its religious organization at that time. So we could possibly see the feature of local society through the social movement of Cheondo-gyo society. This article takes the research subject with the social movement of Cheondo-gyo society in Eonyang. They're almost newly recognized society in the region since Cheondo-gyo was introduced. Throughout Japanese colonial period, they became the member of Cheondo-gyo society, participated in the social movement in the region, saw much changes that their influence has waned. That was proceeded by reflecting the feature of Eonyang local community and the change of the way of Japanese colonial rule. This article aim to reveal the specific feature of Cheondo-gyo devotee in Eonyang over Japanese colonial period, by doing this study, to take a careful look at the feature and change phase of Eonyang local community. The first materials used for this article are directly related to the activity of Cheondo-gyo. 《Eoynwonlok》(연원록), the daily record of missionary work remained in Eonyang parish and 《Beegozang》(비고장), A book compiled by the breakdown of contributions of Cheondo-gyo devotee, 《Kongharm》(공함), an official record of Cheondo-gyo, helped to feel out the aspect and the activity of Cheondo-gyo devotees. It is analyzed by the past newspapers, study articles, the document of the Japanese Government General of Korea what regional social activity was made by Cheondo-gyo devotees. And oral interview was also used to make it clear what was not remained by document. The research results can be summarized as the follows. Firstly, in chapter one, the purpose of this study related to the social movement of Cheondo-gyo devotee in Eonyang would be revealed, existing study history on the racial movement of Chendo-gyo so far would be summarized In chapter two, it would be described how cheondo-gyo was introduced to Eonyang and the process of missionary work, an analysis of relationship between initial devotees. Also, there would be study on the role of Cheondo-gyo devotees on the March 1 independence movement in Eonyang and the summary of influence on Cheondo-gyo devotees in Eonyang by the March 1 independence movement. Since Choi, Hye-Kyu(최해규) was confirmed into Cheondo-gyo in 1910, the parish in Eonyang was established and the Cheondo-gyo was introduced. The missionary work was done on the basis of the various social relationship like brothers and sisters, the neighborhood, a family, school ties, a matrimonial relation and so on, and when it was jointed with the yeonwon(연원), the relationship between the devotee was to develop and grow. Their influence became wider gradually then ever so they was the ceter force of demonstrations of three cheers in Eonyang in 1919. In chapter three, there are analysis about social movement of Cheondo-gyo devotees in Eonyang in 1920's. In that decade, the activities of Cheondo-gyo devotees in Eonyang was performed separately with those activities in Ulsan. In 1914, although Eonyang was united into Ulsan, their activities was still worked separately as another administrative districts and social network. With this influence, they got to have different order as parish with devotees in Ulsan. The devotees in Eonyang was placed under the control of federation of Cheondo-gyo, in which influence was not so strong, I Eonyang there are no operating group like Cheongdo-Gyo Yusin-CheongNyun-Society. The social movement of Cheondo-gyo devotee in Eonyang was developed like general local community movements in 1920 and separated from their activities. One of the two was performed as local community movements as an education campaign, a speech service, an organization of reformism etc. The other one was a youth movement performed by young adult group of Cheondo-gyo in HyungSin-a young men´s association. The movement was separated into each but there are much common part in their activities. There was no concrete movement organization but they had continuous relationship and place to communicate up till 1920. As they have developed social movements, it was Cheondo-gyo to be intersection of them. So they could perform movements role as local elite through this Ceondo-gyo. In chapter four, it is described that there was Cheondo-gyo's force shrinking and their new seek in 1930. In this times, Colonial system was becoming more harsh, the activities of social organization was much tightly retricted. On Eonyang's Cheondo-gyo side, their activities narrowed more and more by Japanese oppression and pro-Japanese. In 1930's, as citizen of Eonyang paid interest on the regional development, there were some changes in local community movements in Eonyang. There was where local elite who have communication skill with the authorities by lawful stepped in. The social movement of local elite Cheondo-gyo was affected. Some adapted devotee continues to perform movements in Eonyang in 1930's but the others didn't have more activities. Their shrinking followed the whole parish's shrinking. But they seek to new way out, their continuous relationship influenced on the parish of today so far. Until now this research looked over the images of past Eonyang in colonial period. There were more than the rule of authorities and the resistance of citizens of colony. There were the complex body of rule and resistance, cooperation and so on. The activity of citizens led the change in regional community and influenced on another citizens. There were the variable by colonial rule's change. Through this research, we can understand with multilateral vision by looking at the regional life lived in various ways specifically in colonial period.
