A Study on the Properties of Crushed Coarse Aggregate for Concrete Moon Ji-young Advisor : Prof. Park Kil-Hyun, Ph. D Department of Civil Engineering Graduate School of Industry Chosun University Concrete is one of most frequently used construction materials and has contributed to the development of domestic economy. It still occupies an important portion in construction industry. Since aggregate occupies 70∼80% of concrete volume, the properties of aggregate have great influence upon the quality of concrete. In this study, the investigator carried out physical, chemical and material tests and analyses of crushed coarse aggregate for concrete in order to understand its suitability. For this, the investigator comparatively examined the physical and chemical properties of crushed coarse aggregate for concrete and the quality of concrete. Study findings are as follows: 1. The particle size of aggregate, which has positive influence upon the physical properties of concrete, had a little influence upon the quality of concrete, but the difference was very small. The difference, which was within the standard of particle size, seemed to be derived from the fact that only one crusher was used in the production of both ascon (asphalt concrete) and road-work aggregate. And the fineness modulus (FM) of aggregate, which numerically presents the state of particle size distribution, was 6.54∼7.04 and there was no significant difference by regions. 2. The density and absorptivity of aggregate, which is the most important standard to evaluate the material quality of aggregate and the base of concrete mix decision, were 2.58g/㎤∼2.72g/㎤ and 0.6∼1.4% respectively. Comparing to other regions, the density and absorptivity of aggregate in Sora-myeon, Yeosu City were 2.71g/㎤ and 0.8% respectively, thus presenting a dense internal texture. 3. The unit volume weight and solid volume percentage of crushed coarse aggregate in Sora-myeon, Yeosu City, of which density was higher, were 1.593kg/ℓ and 59.4% respectively, thus presenting higher values than the averages of 1.556kg/ℓand 59.0%. 4. The wash loss, which has significant influence upon the solidity and durability of concrete, was 0.2% in average. Since it is within the scope of 1% quality standard, it seems to have no significant influence upon the quality of concrete. In addition, if fineness modulus is smaller, the particle size is smaller too, thus presenting the fact that there are more smaller size aggregate and the wash loss is higher. 5. The chemical test-oriented stability of crushed coarse aggregate, one of quality characteristics, was about 3.1% in average. That of Yeosu City was 3.9% and it was higher than those of other regions. But it was below of 12%―quality standard―and therefore it seems to have no significant influence upon the stability. When fine aggregate increased by 1.0%, slump and air volume increased and compressive strength decreased in general. But there was no significant difference. In conclusion, study findings show that crushed coarse aggregate is appropriate for concrete. If the particle size and form are improved, porosity will become smaller, thus realizing economically desirable solidity. In this vein, study findings can be used as basic data to secure the quality of concrete.
