This study aims at examining the influence of Japonism in the modern European art trend from the perspective of interculturalism. The scope of trend includes Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Aesthetic Movement, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Nabis and Art Nouveau which had an apparent link to Japonism. It also aims at figuring out the relation between the modern Europe and Japonism as the result of two-way interchange. The nineteenth-century in modern art was an era of upheaval to witness a change of Ways of seeing. In particular, Japonism, firstly introduced to the Western through an international exhibition since they took the policy of the open door. They selected Japanese artifacts and paintings as an exotic material and finally they adopted formative characters of Japanese Ukiyo-e to their works. In the mean time, there was the grip of fever in Japan when they began to accept western drawing technique from the sixteenth century on. Western drawing technique began to be reflected from southern barbarians art in Azuchi-Momoyama period. Based on it, Ukiyo-e actively adopted western aerial perspective or linear perspective. In chapter 2, modern Japan's socio-cultural background and western fever were analyzed. And the effect of western drawing technique was studied by dividing each introducing period of western technique in pre-modern Japan. The first period was the period at a time when Christianity was introduced and southern barbarians art was popular. And the second period was beginning from the eighteenth century when Western Style painting was settled as a genre and matured. And the progress of Ukiyo-e in Japan and the introduction of Western drawing technique were examined. Finally, a new trend of Japanese modern artifacts influenced by Art Nouveau was analyzed. In chapter 3, modern Europe's socio-cultural background and Japonism fever were analyzed. The process from an encounter between western and Japan through a simple exotic hobby to an formative change was examined. Accordingly, the general influence of Japonism over modern Europe's painting, graphic, picture, artifacts and music, and the relation of the contemporary artistic trend were compared and analyzed. In chapter 4, the effect of Japonism in the formative expression in painting of modern Europe was analyzed based on the analyses of chapters 3 and 4. From an exotic hobby and choice of an oriental material to construction according to composition and disposition, the relation of effect in formative expression was divided and comparatively analyzed through the illustration case. As a result, it showed that there exist an irony that technique and character of Japanese art which was influenced by the western had influenced critically to the birth of Europe' modernism in turn through Japonism. This demonstrates the need to investigate the change of western and eastern arts not in an unilateral way of transfer but in a mutual communication. And the study of cultural communication from the perspective of interculturalism brings our attention to the fact that culture is extremely dynamic and the output of two-way interaction.
