This paper aims to examine Caryl Churchill's plays through a feminist approach, especially based on Julia Kristev's theories. According to Julia Kristeva's theory, the pre-oedipal stage as the Semiotic which there is no sexual difference and is always ununited makes the Symbolic unstable by generating different and unlimited meanings. It exists in the unconsciousness and always invades and disrupts the symbolic order. Therefore, it is the power of resistance and rejection which threatens the Symbolic. Kristeva regards a woman as a concept which has the marginality and as a stranger forever in the Symbolic. She thinks that a woman is silent and absent but has the power to threaten and overturn the Symbolic order. Kristeva introduces the concept of the Abject which is neither subject nor object to explain the power of the Semiotic. It exists between subject and object and has feminine and mothering reflection by symbolizing repressed and excluded object in the Symbolic order. Churchill exposes and criticizes difference between power and class as the cause of women's oppression. In her plays, she portrays the subordinated women and reveals the sexual norms and the cultural and social conditions. Also, she concretizes the possibilities of resistance and rejection of women which the Symbolic can't remove completely. For my study, I have chosen Churchill's three major plays: Cloud Nine, Top Girls, and Vinegar Tom. In Cloud Nine, Churchill reveals the fixed and unified sexual identity under the patriarchal symbolic order. She criticizes the men's symbolic society through the discovery of true sexual identity for the women and the sexual minorities by trying to surpass the limit of the dichotomous sexual structure. In Top Girls, the successful women who internalize the concept of difference of male ideology act as agents of men's dominant power. Churchill exposes an awareness of true feminism by reviewing the power of resistance which is based on diversity and individuality of women who are marginalized and excluded. In Vinegar Tom, by reviewing witch-huntings, recognizing a woman to be a witch turns out to be the way of oppressing women by male dominant society. Male power society based on Christianity suppresses women with power and medical knowledge of the time. Also, the physical standard for judging witches is a ideology by which the patriarchal system tries to put women in subordinate places. But women who name themselves witches are people with independent and revolutionary power. As a result, both Churchill and Kristeva discourse fluid and unconstrained subjectivity beyond dichotomous sexual identities divided into men and women. They expose the Semiotic woman who subverts all of fixed order and unified concepts of the Symbolic. This paper has significance to analyze how Churchill's plays describe women's places and power to subvert in the Symbolic focusing on Kristeva's theories.
