The idea for this article arose by questioning the opinion of Korea Communications Standards Commission in which the use of subtitles constituted of unstandardized language negatively affect audience's ordinary language. In order to scientifically prove this question, Davison's third-person effect hypothesis was used as a theoretical background. According to the third-person effect hypothesis, a person exposed to a persuasive communication in the mass media, such as the subtitles of unstandardized language used in television's entertainment programs, sees it as having a greater effect on others' ordinary language than on himself or herself. In accordance with literature review and theoretical background, this article attempted to find out the followings. The existence of the third-person effect on subtitles of unstandardized language as a perceptual level was first examined followed by a behavioral hypothesis predicting that perceiving others as more vulnerable increases support for restrictions on subtitles of unstandardized language. By using t-test and regression analysis, the hypotheses were tested. The results of this study are as follows; First, the third-person effect in response to social distance was tested. This article's participants, undergraduate and graduate students in their 20s, perceived that subtitles of unstandardized language have greater effect on themselves than comparably older and socially far distanced 40 years old people and above. This result of the third-person effect was also applicable between the comparison of the participants and their socially close distanced peers, as well as their peers and comparably younger and socially far distanced people, the teenagers. Second, a hypothesis that the perceived effects on subtitles of unstandardized language on low likeability group will be greater than perceived effects on high likeability group was tested. The result shows that only the comparison between self and peers was supported. Other comparisons were vice versa. Third, a lot of previous research shows that the valence of media message also affects the third-person effect size. A hypothesis that the perceived effects on subtitles of unstandardized language on negative attitudinal group will be greater than perceived effects on positive attitudinal group was tested. The result shows that only the comparisons between self and peers, as well as teenagers and peers were supported. Finally, the third-person effect is important to issues of censorship. A person tends to believe, it is the general public that needs to be protected, not them. A hypothesis that the third-person perceptions on the subtitles of unstandardized language will be positively associated with support for censorship of subtitles was tested. The result shows that the perceptual bias towards the subtitles of unstandardized language was rejected. All the rejected hypotheses could be explained by the unique characteristic of television's entertainment programs, its freedom of ethical norms. To sum up, this article unconventionally applied subtitles to the third-person effect. It showed how the freedom of ethical norms, the unique characteristic of television's entertainment programs, differently affect on social distance, likeability, attitude towards subtitles, and censorship- all of which are the variables of the third-person effect hypothesis. The findings of this article will be useful in the future on the aspects of subtitles used in television's entertainment programs, audiences' attitude towards subtitles, and media censorship.
