The men of the time are able to have convenient and stable life through the use of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels which are positioned as an important source of energy are currently indispensable in our lives and the significance of fossil fuel is more and more growing with the development of industry. Among these energies, the annual domestic consumption of LPG and LNG gas is increasing steadily. Because of these increase, the management for safety use is important issue. The accidents caused by gas explosion are various forms from leakage to explosion. If the accident is occurred by these gases, it is easy to lead to greater damage than other accident. So it requires the risk management to reduce the spread of damage. In addition, it is increased about interest of new and renewable energy to reduce the burden of problem by depletion of fossil fuels and air pollution. So LPG and DME are going to be replaced by DME-LPG mixture and HCNG mixture. Because these energies are flammable gases, it is not safety about explosion. In this paper, quantitative risk analysis to use alternative mixture in existing facilities is studied by using three types of model to manage the risk.
Gas explosion prediction tools are developed and used in safety. These models can be classified into empirical model, phenomenological model and CFD model. Empirical model is used to calculate the simple expressions from real data, so it can calculate faster than models of other categories. Phenomenological model considering the physical phenomena is calculated by computer. And CFD model is considering real fluid dynamics, so it can simulate the real flow of fluid. But it is too difficult to simulate exactly same results with real flow, so it is needed more development. Among these models, three models are selected in each types of model: TNT Equivalency model, PHAST, FLACS. These selected model is using in real business, because these models have high reliability.
In the result of comparison of gas explosion prediction model, PHAST is phenomenological model is suitable for VCE to predict the overpressure depending on the distance because it has fast and medium accuracy. And in case of BLEVE, PHAST is also recommended, because BLEVE can be simulated in PHAST. FLACS is 3-D CFD model can use to reduce the damage internal structure. Because FLACS can confirm the distribution of overpressure in the filling station, it can be used to confirm and verification by protection facilities. In case of using CFD model, it is limited to use anywhere. So, it is predicted first by PHAST and the scenario requiring more specific results may be simulated by requesting possible agency.
The results expected by the comparison of models, in case of using DME-LPG in LPG filling station, the results of overpressure shaped by VCE at 50m from ignition show similar values in each result, i.e. 0.11 bar by TNT equivalency model, 0.39 ㍴ by PHAST. For LPG, the overpressures are 0.13 bar by TNT equivalency model, 0.39 ㍴by PHAST. And for BLEVE, the results at 50 m from ignition are similar value in each result too, i.e. 0.1 ㍴for LPG, 0.09 bar for DME-LPG mixture. So DME-LPG mixture does not have more risk than LPG by explosions, thus it can use in existing LPG filling station. Also, in case of HCNG in CNG station, gas explosion in unconfined space has low overpressure compared with CNG. The results of overpressure shaped by VCE at 50 m from ignition show similar values in each result, i.e. 0.43 bar by TNT equivalency model, 0.97 ㍴by PHAST. For CNG, the overpressures are 0.4 bar by TNT equivalency model, 0.87 ㍴by PHAST. The reason that the results of HCNG are higher than CNG is that the heat of combustion of hydrogen is higher than methane which is main component of CNG. And for the result by FLACS, the overpressures shaped in filling station are 0.19 ㍴when CNG is used and 0.16 ㍴ when HCNG is used in CNG filling station. Check out the above results, it is expected that using new-energy mixture in existing filling stations has no more risk by explosion. The results comparing with each explosion prediction model, because PHAST has middle accuracy and fast calculation and supports the BLEVE simulation, it is appropriate model for VCE and BLEVE to expect the overpressure related with distance. And because FLACS which is 3-D CFD model can confirm the overpressure distribution, it can check the highest overpressure spot in the filling stations, so it is able to use to find effect or verification by protection facilities. In this study, explosion prediction model is studied and the differences of results by models are compared. Through a comparison of the practical results, the way of using suggested when and how to use these models.
