COD, T-N, T-P NH⁴-N, NO²-N, NO³-N, PO⁴-P

This study aimed to enhance the effluent water quality of an MBR process as well as to investigate the effect of high shock loads of organic matter to the performance of the MBR system. The effluent characteristics were monitored to examine the influence of powdered activated carbon to the improvement of membrane permeability. Phenol was also added into the synthetic feed water as the carbon source to investigate the internal changes that may occur inside the MBR system. Stable effluent quality was achieved at the optimal operating condition. Synthetic feed water, sludge in each reactor and effluent water were subjected in various analyses, which include COD, T-N, T-P, NH⁴-N, NO²-N, NO³-N, PO⁴-P, MLSS, MLVSS and TMP. The effluent quality standard was adopted as the basis for the effluent water produced in the MBR system with target concentration values of 20 ㎎/ℓ, 20 ㎎/ℓ and 0.2 ㎎/ℓ for COD, T-N and T-P, respectively.
Critical flux was determined by measuring the differential pressure occurred during filtration. The film developed on the membrane surface was reduced through the addition of powdered activated carbon, which allowed the process to operate at a higher flux. Efficient COD removal was achieved regardless of the increasing influent organic matter concentration in the synthetic feed water, which also increased the C/N ratio and C/P ratio that further enhanced the removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P. MLSS concentration increased proportionally with the increase in influent COD concentration. A gradual decrease in MLSS concentration was observed after reducing the amount of influent COD, which could be attributed to the relatively low F/M ratio inside reactor. This resulted to the reduction in the performance efficiency of the entire MBR system.
Influence in the organic matter and nitrogen removal efficiencies was found to be unaffected with the addition of 5 g/ℓ powdered activated carbon. However, phosphorus was significantly reduced after PAC addition. The effluent T-P concentration was enhanced from 0.6 ㎎/ℓ to 0.2 ㎎/ℓ of the MBR system without and with PAC, respectively. The final removal efficiencies of the two systems were 90% and 96%, respectively, which proves that the T-P removal performance was improved with PAC injection. The final T-P concentration attained the appropriate level imposed by the strengthened water quality standards for effluent T-P concentration of 0.2 ㎎/ℓ.
MBR 2, which was added with PAC, obtained 100 % removal while 100 ㎎/ℓ phenol concentration was recovered from the effluent of MBR 1. Addition of PAC resulted in relatively low effluent phenol concentration in MBR 2 compared to MBR 1.
Significant influence of C/N and C/P ratios were observed in nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies. In addition, MBR filtration performance was improved with the injection of powdered activated carbon. Results showed that the water effluent quality could be enhanced by the application of MBR system. This may help sewage treatment plants to attain the effluent water quality standards at an acceptable level. Moreover, improved handling of water quality is foreseen to be a potential advantage to increase the re-use of treated wastewater for various applications.
