Korean stromatolites from the Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Mesozoic sedimentary sequences: distribution, morphotypes and genesis :

In Korea, various forms (e.g., domal, stratiform, columnar stromatolites, and stromatolitic algal encrustation) of freshwater and marine stromatolites are found from the Paleozoic (e.g., Choseon Supergroup) and the Mesozoic (e.g., Gyeongsang Basin) as well as the Precambrian sedimentary sequences (e.g., Socheong Island). These stromatolites are distributed over a broad area and are very superior in the morphological, mineralogical and microfossil preservation condition, being regarded to greatly contribute to solving the problem on their formation cause, a global concern. Two forms (columnar and stratiform) of stromatolites are found from Socheong Island, most of which are columnar stromatolites. A columnar stromatolite shows a very simple form of non-branching. The internal structure of stromatolites was metamorphosed very much but has a fine lamination structure of typical stromatolites, showing several bacteria (Myxococcoides, Eoentophysalis, Eoelipsoides and sparsely filamentous bacteria) regarded to have contributed to the formation of stromatolites at Socheong Island in its organic layer. The columns of Socheong Island stromatolites have a regular degree of inclination in a certain direction. The researches on the inclination have been realized largely in two aspects, an interesting one of which is the research on heliotropism (e.g., Vanyo and Awramic, 1982; 1985). As a result of researches on heliotropism here, it is judged that they were formed by the secondary structure deformation during or after the growth of stromatolites rather than the influence of heliotropism. In addition, considering that they were distributed over a very extendable and broad area, it is interpreted that monospecific stromatolites had lived forming reefs in a shallowmarine at that time. Paleozoic stromatolites are found from the Choseon Supergroup, being very bad in diversity, extensibility, form conservation, etc. as compared to stromatolites of other geologic time (e.g., Precambrian and Mesozoic stromatolites). However, the meaning indicated by the environment is as big as that indicated by the Paleozoic and Mesozoic stromatolites. In the Paleozoic, two forms (stratiform and small dome) of stromatolites are found, but most of them are stratiform stromatolites. They were found sporadically, or as a isolated small dome showing a poor lateral continuity. They do not form a reef structure. It is not, therefore, considered that stromatolites were major depositional facies during the early Paleozoic (Cambro-Ordovician) periods in Korean Peninsular. The so-called "Mungokri stromatolite" distributed on the cliffs around the Namgyo riverside at Mungokri, Bukmyeon, Yeongwolgun, Kangwondo, Korea was designated as natural monument No. 413 (Yeongwol Mungokri Desiccation Crack and stromatolites) in March 2000, but their internal and external forms are different from general stromatolites to cause a controversy about their authenticity. The Mungokri stromatolites are partially similar to the LLH type of laterally-linked hemispherical stromatolites. The continuity of a dome structure, however, is not observed to the bottom through the vertical section to the bedding plane, and the fine lamination structure, a characteristic feature of stromatolites, is not observed either in the fields or even from the thinsection. They, consequently, cannot be regarded as stromatolites. In addition, the smooth surface structure of the Mungokri stromatolites and the irregular crack structure between their domes suggest that they are another form of sedimentary structure, so they are interpreted as 'mud mound' by considering the observed features. Accordingly, it is required to review their existing name‘stromatolites'. Mesozoic stromatolites are found from the Jinju Formation of Sindong Group and the Banyawol Formation of Hayang Group. The Mesozoic stromatolites were formed in a non-marine environment differently from stromatolites of other geologic time (e.g., Precambrian and Mesozoic stromatolites). Therefore, their geological implication is rather small, but they are more superior to stromatolites of other geologic time (e.g., Precambrian and Paleozoic) in terms of their preservational state, morphological diversity, laminated fabrics, and mocrofossils preserved. The Mesozoic stromatolites are largely classified into six morphotypes such as large domes forming a huge stromatolitic reef, mini-domes, micro-columns, stratiform, thin crusts, and stromatolitic algal encrustations. The most interesting ones are the so-called “rod-shaped stromatolites”, rarely reported in the world. Rod-shaped stromatolites are of a structure formed by the precipitation of a concentric structure of carbonate minerals on the surface of plant twigs by the epiphytic algal or bacterial photosynthesis living on the surface of plant twigs. These show the same internal structure as stromatolites, and also have the same formation mechanism as stromatolites. However, a rod-shaped stromatolite disobeys the definition of a stromatolite, so it cannot be called a stromatolite. A stromatolite means an organo-sedimentary structure growing upward while showing a lamination structure, but a rod-shaped stromatolite has a concentric structure of lamination. These rod-shaped stromatolites are formed a lot in modern, especially in a place with flowing water or in a place with high calcium carbonate saturation (e.g., Dijon, France). This rod-shape stromatolite is a kind of encrustation with a stromatolitic structure on the surface of dead or living plant twigs. Therefore it is most reasonable to call this structure "stromatolitic algal encrustation". A typical lamination structure of stromatolites where organic-rich layers and sediment-rich layers alternate repeatedly with each other is observed from inside of these. Various filamentous fossils are found from the organic-rich layers, and their diameter is 1 ㎛~44 ㎛. These are largely classified into two groups such as cyanobacteria and green algae.
