Level of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid Determines its Role as a Growth-Promoting Factor or a Bioherbicide in Rice Plants : 5-Aminolevulinic acid(ALA)

Effect of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) on plant growth rate was examined in rice plants treated with various concentrations of ALA. Low concentration (0.075 mM) of ALA (L-ALA) increased biomass, as indicated by fresh and dry weight, of rice shoots up to 14 %, demonstrating that ALA at low concentration can act as a growth-promoting factor. L-ALA plants also increased ALA-synthesizing capacity and chlorophyll content, but did not develop any photodynamic symptoms. In contrast, plants treated with high concentration (1.0 mM) of ALA (H-ALA) developed severe necrosis and oxidative stress, as indicated by increased levels of malondialdehyde and H2O2, as well as a decrease in photosynthetic efficiency. They also resulted in higher levels of antioxidant systems that destroy reactive oxygen species in response to the photodynamic effects of accumulating protoporphyrin IX, a photosensitizer. However, the increased activities and transcript levels of antioxidant enzymes were not sufficient to overcome photodynamic damage, thereby decreasing plant growth rate in H-ALA plants. H-ALA plants had greater decreases in levels of porphyrin intermediates and porphyrin biosynthetic genes compared with those of L-ALA plants. Taken together, these results demonstrate that ALA can act as both a growth-promoting factor and a bioherbicide depending on its concentration in rice plants.
