TPEE has excellent mechanical strength, broad use temperature and flex fatigue properties, so it should be called as engineering thermoplastic elastomers. The major applications of TPEE in automobile parts are boots or air ducts which are made by blow-molding. However, common TPEE has insufficient melt viscosity for extrusion blowing. Another major application of TPEE is multi-component molding into a structural part (hard polymer) due to its good adhere to many plastics. Most of multi-component molding applications need flexibility, more soft properties (soft-touch) or sealing function(low compression set). However, high hardness (available grades with hardness from 36D to 75 Shore D) and high compression set of TPEE make them less than desirable for these applications where flexibility, softness and sealing function is deemed important. From such a view point, the possibility to increase melt viscosity of TPEE was carried out by reactive extrusion of TPEE with chain extender. In addition blending with SEBS was carried out to increase flexibility and softness of TPEE In Chapter II, the branched thermoplastic polyether-ester elastomer was melt extruded with isocyanate and glycidyl compound in an effort to enhance melt viscosity for the blow molding process. The chain extended TPEE was prepared with melt condensation of a branched TPEE using 4,4?-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) as a chain extender for enhancement of the molecular weight of TPEE. The effects of MDI and TGIC contents as a chain extender on melt, thermal, mechanical were compared. Rheological properties of the chain-extended TPEE were further investigated. The intrinsic viscosity (IV) increased and melt flow index (MI) decreased with an increasing amount of MDI due to the reaction between the hydroxyl end groups of TPEE and isocyanate groups of MDI. The chain-extended TPEE does not lead to an important drop in elongation at break. The tensile strength and the tear strength are characterized by a significant increase, compared with a branched TPEE. The storage modulus, loss modulus and the complex viscosity of the chain-extended TPEE using MDI were also higher. The modified Cole-Cole plots revealed that the chain-extended TPEE shows a higher elasticity than the branched TPEE. The chain- extended TPEE has more suitable melt and rheological properties for the blow molding processes. However, chain extension using TGIC does not increase melt viscosity of TPEE sufficiently. In Chapter III, the mechanical properties of chain extended TPEE (C-TPEE) were compared with that of chloroprene rubber (CR) which is specially compounded for constant velocity joint (CVJ) boot. Mechanical strength, thermal stability, grease resistance, low temperature and dynamic fatigue properties were compared. The values of tensile strength and elongation at break of C-TPEE are almost double than that of CR. C-TPEE also had excellent tear strength than CR. The heat aging results showed the C-TPEE was more stable than CR on a long-term service at 150℃. The flex-cut growth properties were measured using De Mattia, CR had a crack less than 1mm after 10,000 cycle but C-TPEE had no crack growth even after 1,000,000 cycle. Both C-TPEE and CR have good grease resistance and low temperature property. In Chapter IV, the branched TPEE was blended with various amounts of SEBS to increase softness and reduce compression set. The effects of the addition of SEBS on the hardness, mechanical strength, compression set and thermal properties of the TPEE/SEBS blend were investigated. The morphology of the TPEE/SEBS blend was also examined by SEM. The particle size of SEBS are bigger and the matrix ligaments are getting shorter with increasing SEBS content, which make blend more ductile. Hardness, flexural modulus and compression set decreased linearly with increasing SEBS content. Tm and TR-10 of TPEE/SEBS blends did not change with SEBS content.
