The original piano piece of 「Pictures at an Exhibition」by composer Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was arranged by many other composers into orchestral versions. Over 13 musicians orchestrated the original piece, for instance, Michael Touschmaloff from Russia for the first time in 1896, followed by Henry Wood from the Britain, Leo Funtek from Slovenia and Ravel from France. Despite it was originally a piano piece, 「Pictures at an Exhibition」could be orchestrated because it contained some elements of orchestral music. Among those many orchestrated versions of the original piano piece, however, what is most often played and most easily heard is Ravel's orchestrated version. This study started from questioning what advantages the Ravel version have, how much effective it is and how it is different from other orchestrated versions of the above piano piece. In researching the orchestration of the original piano piece, this study assumed it's more effective to compare and analyze two different orchestrated versions of the piece, rather than just comparing that piece with its orchestrated versions like in previous researches. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to compare and analyze Touschmaloff's orchestrated version, which was the first orchestral arrangement of the above original piano piece and played in 1891, and Ravel's which is frequently played even today. By analyzing many different methods of orchestrating the above original piano piece, this study shows how musical characteristics of the piece can be so differently expressed and suggests which method of orchestral arrangement is more effective for the piano music. And by comparing and analyzing features found in the different orchestated versions of the piano piece this study suggests there's no limit in the applications of orchestration.
