Human beings express themselves by painting, and a number of artists select nature for their subject matter. Among the theme, I visually imaged the beauty of flowers through the lotus. Even though lotuses grow in swamps or ponds, it is not stained by the muddy water and it means purity and innocence in floral language. Because of this feature, lotuses are known to be loved by many people. The countries that are historically related to lotuses are Korea, India, Egypt, China and so on. In India, lotuses have been a flower that represents life and hope in folk religion before even Buddhism was established. In Egypt, lotuses were thought to be the root of life and symbolizes revival, richness, and palingenesis. As it was introduced to China, the lotus became the typical symbol of a classical scholar's aloofness in daily life which includes paintings and literature. They respected the symbolic value of the flower rather than the natural beauty of itself. They set the dignity of the flower by the standard of human ethicality, and through this standard, they distinguished their likes and dislikes. In this reason, people consider the lotus as a symbol of scholarly attitude and taste for arts, and so it became a beloved flower. This study is based on expressing the image of the lotus by watercolor painting. For this, I studied techniques using the organic characteristic of water, and techniques using various tools and materials. Also I tried to enhance comprehension by presenting pieces of artists who treats flowers. Those artists of the West and East are Georgia O'Keeffe, Kyung Ja Cheon, and Emile Nolde. Through studying the ideologies and the works of these artists, I could reconsider the significance of my works. I believe the process of analysing and studying their works would be very meaningful in seeking direction of my future works. In analysing my work, I presented the intention of producing among with the formal analysis of the flower as well as reenacting it. Also, I added the explanation of my work to help better understanding. The image of the lotus in my work is an ideal material to restore dreams, hopes, delight and pleasure and is a symbolic meaning of purity. This symbolic meaning as affinity with human is a genuine form of people who adapt to nature. Furthermore, through this research, I will seek a new way in watercolor painting and broaden the expression of thoughts and feelings in multidirectional attempt.
