This research aims to study the effect of English musical activity on English speaking ability and in the affective area of students by planning and applying the English musical. This can attract students' interest based on the developmental characteristics of the senior-year-students in elementary school. To meet the aim, analysis on the developmental characteristics of senior-year-students of primary school was conducted. An English musical was designed and 20 classes of 'understanding the musical', 'small grouping', 'writing a script', casting, 'creation of music and dancing', 'acting exercise', researsal, presentation and assessment were given to one class of 6 grade students. In order to study the effect of English musical on students English proficiency, speaking ability and affective area were tested before and after the musical classes. Class logs and lecture logs were kept and later analyzed. Through the experiment, the following results were found. Firstly, the students' speaking ability improved through the musical activity. When the students are grouped according to the English speaking level, fluency improved in the intermediate level group and the lower level group showed development in accuracy and fluency. The latter case showed significant qualitative improvement such as an increase in vocabulary and active response to questions. Secondly, the musical activity positively influenced the affective area such as the students' attitude toward studying English and their interest in English. In the upper and intermediate level group interest and participation increased but in the lower level group there was an overall improvement in the affective area. Thirdly, when the teacher's logs and students' logs were analyzed, a range of difference in interest and participation in the musical activities and various sub-activities was found depending on their English proficiency level but overall interest and participation in studying English had improved. In conclusion, the students' English speaking ability improved and especially the affective area was developed much more through English musical activity. If it is possible to motivate senior-year-students who are losing their interest in studying English to re-gain their interest in English through English musical activity, we can expect it to become a good tool to improve English language proficiency. Based on the results of the study on the instruction program matching students' abilities mentioned above, the proposals are as follows: 1) There is expected to be more effectiveness in the speaking area if the musical activity is developed, given that plenty of time is allocated initial planning until the stage of evaluation. 2) As the difficulties lie in securing the time for the musical, it is necessary to reconstruct the curriculum in such a way that musical synthetic aspects are interwoven with each subject. 3) Securing a spacious stage is required in order to display all of what the students prepare, as the music is a vehicle of the play. The musical activity includes not only language components, but dramatic, musical, choreographical, and artistic components in an integrated manner, through which students are able to be given an opportunity to foster their speaking proficiency as well as a chance to develop their talent. The musical activity is a synthetic approach as a learning strategy to provide students with interests and participation, which probability into the classroom situation can be suggested.
