This dissertation is on elementary school sixth graders’ understanding of the concept of variables showing as the result of previous learning before the genuine learning of them. And it was found that although variables are the complex concept having a rich conceptual structure, elementary mathematics has dealt with the concept of variables in the limited range of placeholders through textbook analysis. This study assumes that the conceptual range of variables elementary school students should achieve includes the aspects of placeholders, polyvalent names, tools of generalization, and change of values. To attain the goal, this paper sets up the error types students may show by analyzing existing theory, mathematics textbooks, and work books. In math textbooks or work books, letters or signs are limitedly used as placeholders of the unknown and rarely used as the aspects of polyvalent names, tools of generalization, or change of values. The error types the students show from learning a limited range of variables include seven kinds. These are the error types: ‘error of manipulating an algebraic expression containing variables procedurally’, ‘error of not figuring out the objects represented by letters or signs’, ‘error of representing several objects with a letter or sign’, ‘error of regarding different letters or signs cannot get the same value’, ‘error of not figuring out the range of variables in the algebraic relational expression’, ‘error of not calculating variable letters’, and ‘error of calculating by substituting numbers for letters or signs’. Next, this study analyzes what error types students show through preliminary test, pretest, and interview and then conducts corrective teaching to six students showing ‘error of representing several objects with a letter or sign’ or ‘error of not calculating variable letters’ in common and performs posttest. And this study has gained the following results. First, the seven error types set up in this paper are all about understanding the concept of variables, so they are associated with each other meaningfully. It was found that corrective teaching for a certain error type affects another error type positively. Second, even though the students established a formula with certain signs in the pretest, they did so with various letters and signs in the posttest. Due to the limited range and types of variables in the previous learning, the students could not select letters and signs to be used as variably properly. It seems that to increase the options solely affected the correction of ‘error of representing several objects with a letter or sign’. Third, after the corrective teaching, the students were better at setting up a formula using letters and signs but had a hard time solving the algebraic expression they made. Teaching equation among the contents of ‘regularity and problem-solving’ area of the mathematics subject in 2007 curriculum revised to be implemented from 2011 will provide students with opportunities to unify the methods to set up and solve formulas by easing the calculation of variable letters. Fourth, the most frequent error type in the pretest was ‘error of regarding different letters or signs cannot get the same value’. The students explain the reason why they chose the answer taking different logics for items needing the same logical thinking. This shows their lack of understanding the concept of variables and also the aspect of insufficient logical thinking. Fifth, the students seemed to be confused when the variable letters were mixed with addition or multiplication signs. Calculation focuses on computing itself rather than the structure of a formula, but they still show difficulty in solving an algebraic formula requiring understanding of the structure. If further learning of variables is conducted before such confusion is settled, more serious errors will occur. It is expected that if a teacher teachers them relating the arithmetic expression with a formula including letters and signs before the genuine learning of ways to make algebraic expressions omitting multiplication signs, students will feel less distance from algebraic expressions later. As the result of the students’ understanding of the concept of variables, this paper gives two suggestions for learning of variables. First, the students tended to depend on calculation methods even after setting up al algebraic expression needed to solve the question provided. Now is the time for the students to see the transition of learning to deal with algebraic expressions, not the calculating manipulation, so it is urgently needed to induce variables, the core of understanding algebra to the actual spots of elementary schools. Second, it is necessary to use variables from various aspects. Just like the range of variables is established in this paper, if elementary school students, too, are taught by extending the range of the roles of variables to polyvalent names, tools of generalization, and relational expressions as well as the unknown, it is expected that they will have no difficulty in further learning of variables Keywords: variable, error, placeholder, polyvalent name
