Proportional reasoning is widely applied to actual life and a foundation of mathematical thinking development and it connects basic ideas between science and mathematics, so it is one of the essential ideas in school mathematics. However, Korean studies mostly deal with students’ proportional problem solving skills compared to foreign studies and lack factors influencing proportional reasoning ability. Even though proportional reasoning ability includes the ability to distinguish proportional situation and non-proportional situation as well as proportional problem solving skills, studies on the ability to distinguish proportional situation and non-proportional situation are very insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to examine visual representation on elementary school students’ proportional reasoning ability by targeting the fifth and sixth graders as it considers proportional problem solving skills and the ability distinguishing proportional situation and non-proportional situation as elements of proportional reasoning ability. To accomplish the purpose, the following research questions were established. First, does visual representation affect a percentage of correct answers to proportional reasoning problems? Second, does visual representation affect the proportional reasoning problem-solving process? Third, does visual representation affect the proportional reasoning problem-solving strategy? Fourth, does visual representation affect error types in the proportional reasoning problem-solving process? First of all, test instruments were made for pretest and actual test. For the pretest, the same test instrument was given to total fifth and sixth graders in B elementary school. The test instrument for pretest consisted of sentence type questions to select the most similar two groups in terms of proportional reasoning ability. In order to examine the effects of visual representation on students’ proportional reasoning ability, the actual test was conducted to the selected two groups. The test instruments for the actual test were divided to A type and B type, and both types had same questions but A type consisted of sentences while B type included sentences and visual representation about problems. The findings are as follows. First, t-test on mean difference between A type and B type of actual test of fifth and sixth graders was carried out to examine the effects of visual representation on percentage of correct answers to proportional reasoning problems. As the result, p-value is 0.030 which means there is a significant difference between two tests. In other words, visual representation contributes to a percentage of correct answers to proportional reasoning problems. Second, to examine the effect of visual representation on the proportional reasoning problem-solving process, results of fifth and sixth graders are integrated to conduct a t-test. The result shows that there is a significant difference only in qualitative comparison problems in the field of proportional problem-solving, and other question types have no significant difference. For the question types of proportional situation recognition, significant difference was found in the questions of situation, y = x + a and y = a^2 due to visual representation. Third, to examine the effect of visual representation on the proportional reasoning problem-solving strategies, problem-solving method strategies about fifth and sixth graders’ proportional problem-solving areas are compared. The result shows that when visual representation is provided, chart making and drawing strategies are decreased while formula making and logical inference strategies are increased. In terms of problem-solving content strategies, there is no big change by visual representation but high level strategies rise slightly. The fifth and sixth graders’ problem-solving method strategies about proportional situation recognition were compared, and the result shows that chart making and drawing strategies are decreased while formula making and logical inference strategies are increased. In addition, when visual representation is given, omissions of explanation process are lower. Fourth, to examine the effect of visual representation on error types in the proportional reasoning problem-solving process, error types in fifth and sixth graders’ proportional problem-solving areas were comprehensively analyzed. This result has found that omissions of the explanation process and errors caused by lack of overall understanding of problems decreased a lot. Besides, the result shows that errors caused by proportional thinking among proportional situation recognition errors decreased in all types of problems. According to the findings, the following conclusions were obtained. First, visual representation of problems improves a percentage of correct answers to proportional reasoning problems. Second, learning should be carried out along with visual representation in the first stage of learning proportional reasoning. Third, visual representation helps children develop problem-solving strategies. Fourth, visual representation helps reduce errors by using proportional reasoning not properly when students solve problems that are non-proportional situations . Fifth, visual representation should be chosen carefully to make right proportional reasoning.
