The insufficient ventilation of apartments due to the recent trend for high airtightness and insulation has increased the incidence of Sick House Syndrome, which has caused the Ministry of Construction and Transportation to make the installation of air ventilation systems compulsory by revising the legal ventilation standard on February 2006 to 0.7 times per hour. As this is expected to bring about an increase in energy consumption, numerous studies pertaining to ventilation efficiency are underway, but most are relying on simulations while there are few examples of actual field ventilation performance evaluations. Furthermore, there are no field studies at all for hybrid class-one ventilation systems. Therefore this study analyzed natural ventilation amounts and evaluated the ventilation performance of ventilation systems including hybrid varieties that are capable of complementing the weaker points of natural and mechanical ventilation, by performing actual measurement experiments in the summer and winter under field environments. Also, I have combined cooler and heater facilities and ventilation systems that together affect indoors temperature, moisture, and thermal comfort, chosen them as air conditioning systems and evaluated their energy usage reduction effect and economical merit using manual code. Through this, I analyzed the possibility of hybrid ventilation systems being applicable to apartments in terms of not only ventilation performance, but also energy usage efficiency. The results of this study are as follows. The results of the evaluation of the summer season ventilation performances of individual ventilation systems showed that rooms satisfied the legal ventilation standard of 0.7 times per hour with natural ventilation alone, both the rooms and the living room were able to use natural ventilation the most with the class-one balanced system. The results of the evaluation of ventilation performance according to hybrid ventilation system showed that in rooms, the ventilation amounts of hybrid 2, 3 were similar at 1.17times/hour and 1.13times/hour, whereas hybrid 1 exhibited approximately 1.4 times more ventilation amount than hybrid 2, 3. Also, hybrid ventilation provided amounts larger than mechanical ventilation amounts by the difference of the amount of natural ventilation and that of infiltration to the indoors, which resulted in a reduction of 0.45times/hour in rooms and 0.12times/hour in the living room of the ventilation amount necessary to satisfy the legal standard compared to mechanical ventilation. The results of the winter season evaluation of ventilation performance according to individual ventilation systems, show that the rooms and the living room all exhibited the most ventilation amount when using the class-one balanced system, while mechanical ventilation in all cases satisfied the legal ventilation standard of 0.7 times per hour. Also, like the results of the summer season measurement, hybrid ventilation was shown to provide more ventilation amounts to the indoors than mechanical ventilation by the difference of the natural ventilation amount and the infiltration amount. This induced a 0.31times/hour reduction in rooms and a 0.1times/hour reduction in the living room of the ventilation amount necessary to satisfy the legal standard compared to mechanical ventilation. The results of the analysis of energy usage reduction effects according to air conditioning system showed that Type 2~4 (mechanical and hybrid ventilation through CO2 control) had a 25~35% effect of reducing air conditioning energy compared to Type 1 (constant 0.7 times per hour mechanical ventilation). Also, because the energy usage amounts of Type 2~4 were similar, the energy usage reduction effect that the introduction of external air through natural ventilation devices had were minimal. In the case of Korea, the legal ventilation standard of 0.7 times per hour was established by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation in order to fundamentally resolve the Sick House Syndrome problem by allowing the immediate expulsion of volatile organic compounds to the outdoors. However, as the results of this study show, keeping the IAQ(Indoors Air Quality) under the level dictated by the legal ventilation standard is possible through the installation of ventilation systems utilizing CO2 control. Therefore, the Korean ventilation standard of 0.7 times per hour is excessive and in need of being reduced.
