The present thesis is concerned with two different oxide-based electrolysis techniques for hydrogen production: Photoelectrochemical electrolysis in Part I and high temperature electrolysis in Part II. Both techniques aim to utilize the renewable or waste heat energy to produce hydrogen efficiently. Oxides are the essential material components in both techniques and key materials responsible for the operation with high efficiency. In Part I titanium oxides and zinc oxides as semiconducting photoanodes of the photoelectrochemical(PEC) cell were revisited. TiO_(2) pellets as-sintered, reduced in hydrogen and nitrided in graphite furnace mixed with TiN were tested. TiO_(2) thin films on stainless steel substrates prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), and by brushing TiO_(2) paste using nitrogen-doped TiO_(2) powder synthesized by ammonolysis. PECVDthin films were also prepared in nitrogen atmosphere. In the conventional design the photoanodes needs laborious epoxy sealing to protect the current collectors. Quartz window is also necessary for the illumination. A miniature PEC cell with non-immersion type photoanodes was designed using a quartz optical cuvette with a drilled hole for the semiconductor electrodes fixed using O-ring system from outside. Ag/AgCl reference electrode was used for a three electrode configuration. TiO_(2) bulk specimen reduced in hydrogen exhibited the reproducible photoresponse but as-sintered bulk specimen, due to the high resistance, and nitrided specimens probably due to extremely porous microstructure, exhibited negligible and irreproducible photoresponses, which suggests a p-type character. TiO_(2) thin films on stainless steel substrates were characterized by photocurrent-voltage measurements in dark and illuminated conditions and Mott-Schottky analysis as well as open-circuit photovoltage measurements. The photocatalytic effects were shown to originate from Schottky barriers, although leaky, in all specimens. Photovoltages, flatband potentials, and photocurrents were proportional to each other. Oxidation of the stainless steel substrates occurred around 0.5 V. PEC activity increased with surface area in the range 50100 ㎡/g. Nitrogen doping apparently beneficial in PEC behavior under white-light illumination. The effects of the crystallographic polarity and the transition metal doping on the PEC performance of zinc oxide single crystals were examined. Zn polarity surfaces were found to exhibit higher photocurrents and photovoltages or flatband potentials than O-polarity planes. Undoped zinc oxide single crystals exhibited highest photocurrents but Mn- and Co-doped crystals showed the continuous increase in photocurrents with applied voltage due to an increased in the space charge layer. Zn-polarity oriented ZnO is promising photoanode material with high performance and stability in alkaline electrolytes. In Part II the electrochemistry in the high temperature electrolysis (HTE) by reverse operation of the solid oxide fuel cells was investigated. Prototype zirconia-supported solid oxide cells with platinum electrode were investigated with the reference electrode to distinguish anode and cathode polarizations. No reliable H_(2)/D_(2)effect on the fuel cell/electrolyzer performance was detected but the cell performance degraded severely with time. Severe degradation was ascribed to the oxidation and or contamination of the platinum electrode. Impedance spectroscopy was applied to understand the polarization and degradation mechanisms in the high temperature operation of the solid oxide cells. The performance of the state-of-the-art Ni-YSZ cermet supported solid oxide cells were found todepend considerably on the current collectors. The loss mechanism in the high temperature electrolysis has not been yet well-known. By including the stray impedance in the modelling, and by testing the validity of the impedance data using linear Kronig-Kramer test, various polarization mechanisms were successfully deconvoluted. Gerischer model was used to describe the process at the porous electrodes. The linear current-voltage behavior over a wide electrolysis current range was found to be the compensation of the LSM resistance decreasing and Ni-YSZ impedance increasing with current levels. With increasing humidity in the constant total flow rates the reaction impedance rather than the diffusion impedance of the Ni-YSZ cermet steam electrode increased. Even in moderately reducing LSM electrode atmosphere, the pumpedin oxygen by the electrolysis can reduce the LSM polarization greatly.
