The increase of anthropogenic carbon dioxide in atmosphere caused a drop in pH of seawater due to the increasing aqueous pCO2. The decrease of pH leads to changes of carbonate chemistry in seawater and therefore changes of calcareous structure of marine organisms. In addition, green-house effects are the main reasons of increasing temperature in surface seawater. The marine ecosystems therefore are exposed to synergistic stresses from combination of elevated pCO2 and increased temperature. Calcareous coralline algae are among the most sensitive organisms to changes in carbonate chemistry of seawater, since coralline algae need a relatively high calcium carbonate saturation state of seawater to maintain and deposit calcifying skeleton. The drop in pH, as well as decline in calcium carbonate saturation state of seawater, combined with increased temperature, brings coralline algae to face high risks of decreasing calcification rate or changes in metabolisms. This study estimated the responses of coralline alga Corallina officinalis to elevated pCO2 and increased temperature conditions predicted for the end of this century. Temperature was increased from 17 to 20 °C combined with elevated pCO2 from ambient value of 450 ppm to high value of 1000 ppm that made four treatments: control (17 °C and 450 ppm), global warming (20 °C and 450 ppm), acidification (17 °C and 1000 ppm), and greenhouse (20 °C and 1000 ppm). The responses of C. officinalis to changes in environmental factors were determined by calcification, photosynthesis and growth rates as well as effective quantum yield of PSII. In general, no significant differences were detected across the treatments compared to control in all parameters measured. However, oxygen production was slightly increased with global warming or acidification treatment. Photosynthesis/respiration ratios were slightly increased with elevated CO2 concentration treatments. Under light condition, calcification was slightly stimulated by global warming but was inhibited at acidification treatment, although greenhouse treatment had no effects on calcification rate. Under dark condition, calcification increased with increasing temperature and pCO2. Effective quantum yield of PSII of C. officinalis was relatively high and maintained stable during experiment period but there were no significant differences between treatments. Growth rate of C. officinalis exhibited the same pattern with oxygen production with no significant differences among treatments but slightly increased at increased temperature (global warming) or elevated pCO2 (acidification) treatments. According to this study, intertidal species like Corallina officinalis that are usually exposed to high fluctuation of temperature and pCO2 may be not sensitive to the ocean acidification or global warming condition in future.
