본 연구의 목적은 중년기 ACOAs(Adult Children of Alcoholics)의 회복경험을 규명하고 설명하는 실체이론을 개발하는 것이다.

Abstract The purpose of This study is to develop a substantive theory that closely examines and explains the recovery experiences of ACOAs(Adult Children of Alcoholics) in their middle years. The study issue was set as "How are the structure and process of the recovery experiences of ACOAs in their middle years who have grown in a family of an alcoholic and made a complete family by getting married and afterwards giving birth to and raising children?". In-depth interviews were conducted with ACOAs in their middle years, and afterwards the data were analyzed by applying the grounded theory method of Strauss and Corbin(1998). The ACOAs in their middle years in This study are those who have lived or live with alcoholic parents and have made a complete family by getting married and giving birth to children and who are 35 years old and older and 60 years old and younger and who are feeling that they have experienced recovery subjectively. This study used the CAST-K measure in order to check if these are ACOAs, and limited the subject of the study as those who scored more than 13 points out of a possible 30. The data collection was conducted through three times of in-depth interviews since August 2008 until May 2010, and the analysis was conducted simultaneously with the data collections according to the procedure of the grounded theory. As a result of the analysis, 121 concepts, 42 lower ranges and 17 ranges were deduced from open coding. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the ACOAs in their middle years who have experienced recovery had experienced a father who failed to become a model of life in the process of growth and couldn't receive concern and care in violence and poverty and played the role as a surrogate parent. Second, the ACOAs in their middle years who have experienced recovery had psychological suppression and negative emotion due to alcoholic parents and considered their alcoholic fathers as the shame of their family. In addition, they experienced the absence of the value of their existence due to their alcoholic fathers and had a firm will to convert the shame due to the alcoholic family into a success of themselves even though they hid the fact that they were children of alcoholics. We could know that the positive motivation for which the ACOAs in their middle years who have experienced recovery could be recovery-oriented in spite of the negative emotions and the sense of shame in the process of growth was 'the formation of a proper relationship with mothers'. They felt gratitude toward mothers who was responsible for the economy of the family instead of fathers and did not give up the education of children and lived strongly, and formed a proper affection relationship with mothers. Therefore it can be known that one of the factors that promote the recovery experiences of the ACOAs in their middle years who participated in This study was 'the heart that wants to recompense their devoted mothers and the hope to overcome poverty and thereby to become a well-off family'. Third, the ACOAs in their middle years who have experienced recovery solved the problem of their shameful family and understood and dealt with the addiction for a better future. They felt the necessity of economic independence and prepared for a better future by dealing with economic lack. In addition, they made active efforts for the change of their family being influenced by addiction and intended to meet a healthy spouse to make a healthy family themselves and took active countermeasures by treating the sense of shame about the addicted family and negative emotion through religion and consultation. It was checked that among the factors that promoted their recovery, there were social support factors such as the support of the original family, the support of the family of their spouses and their current family, economic stability, therapeutic environment, the support of friends, religious support and so on. Fourth, the recovery of ACOAs in their middle years first led to the result that they forgive themselves and their parents and make peace. They made efforts to continue the newly changed family relationship in the economic stability and social success and have an active and positive attitude toward life. In addition, they were showing the results of recovery in which they provide proper care to themselves and adopt their own shortages and intend to take care of poor neighbors and live a life of self-actualization. Fifth, the stages of the recovery experiences of the ACOAs in their middle years following the flow of time were 5 in This study. That is, they were reaching recovery going through the process of circulation and repetition of 5 stages such as the stage of exposure to the tragic home environment, the stage of experience of a sense of shame, the stage of display of the will to reverse the life, the stage of countermeasures for reversed life and the stage of forgiveness and reconciliation. Sixth, it was clarified that the core range of the recovery experiences of the ACOAs in their middle years is 'the realization of the reversed life that overcomes the shame of addiction'. 'The realization of the reversed life that overcomes the shame of addiction' means that they make a continuous development converting the sense of shame deep inside into a moment of self-actualization in the process in which the ACOAs grow in an addicted family in their childhood and make a healthy family in their middle years or in which they change from the suppression and negative emotion of their childhood into an active and positive emotion. The biggest significance of This study is that This study could probe the internal psychological process of the ACOAs who have experienced recovery in their middle years in depth through the grounded theory paradigm model not like the existing studies focusing on the variables influencing ACOAs or characteristic variables. That is, the significance
