The reduction of geo-technical bearing capacity generally depends on the weathering process of rock layer. The weathering of granite is frequently used to refer the degradation for soil layer index on design and construction for infra-structure. In this study, the relationship between chemical index of alteration (CIA) and soil layer index has been explored for igneous rock, which composed of 45.5 % out of South Korean territory. Several weathering indices were studied for various rocks found in Korea and significant relationships between different indices were delineated via statistical analysis. The applicability of CIA was found to be most significant among all weathering indicies. CIA ranges between 50 and 70 and distributes between 50 and 80 for fresh to moderately weather granite and intermediate volcanic rocks, respectively. The composition of illite, the secondary weathering residual, generally increases for the felsic rock, and swelling clay material is not included. The weathering of felsic rock will follow a sequential process, starting from bedrock, illite, and chlorite to kaoline. The mafic rock will shows a weather process, from bedrock, smecite, and chlorite to kaoline. The intermediate rocks such as andesite and tuff will show similar weather procedure and the composition of kaoline, chlorite, and smectite tends to increase over that of illite when the mafic rock is dominated. This mean the increasement of rock material which has high cation exchange capacity during secondary weathering process. Various igneous rocks were tested using the uniaxial compression testor. The difference in uniaxial compressive strength is hardly found for the chronological order in rock formation. The test results also indicate the order of strength as; rhyolite, andesite, granite, gabbro, tuff, basalt. However, it cannot be completely characterized a specific rock using merely CIA, since it is exclusively based on chemical composition and corresponding alteration. The CIA can be used to quantify the weathering process in a limited range, and further consideration such as rock composition, strength characteristics will be required to configure the comprehensive weathering impact to any specific region.
