ABSTRACT Develop an Educational Program for Sleeping Health in Early Infancy and Test Its Effects Jang Sook Department of Nursing Graduate School Sahmyook University Directed by Professor Kim, Il Ok, Ph D., RN In early infancy where an infant develops its own sleeping and activity cycle, keeping the sleeping and activity rhythms normally is as important as actual sleeping or more important than actual sleeping. In infancy, the sleeping and arousal state reflects the development of the infant's central nerve system and the effects of ongoing interactions between the infant and the environment, while the development of acts related to sleeping takes up a part in the overall maturity and learning process. The purposes of this study were to develop an educational program for sleeping health in early infancy and test its effects with a group of first-time mothers. After applying an "educational program for infants' sleeping health," the investigator conducted a quasi-experimental research in a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design to examine the effects of the program on the mothers' knowledge of infants' sleeping health and confidence in the performance of their roles as mothers. The program contained such educational content as an infant's sleeping and activity cycle, parenting, babies' signals, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and infants' sleeping disorder. The subjects were gathered at postpartum care centers of obstetrics and gynecology clinics in two metropolitan cities of similar income levels by the content of the clinic directors, chief nurses, and heads of postpartum care centers. The study adopted 38 criterion-based items developed based on the teaching design model by Dick & Carey(2008) to measure mothers' knowledge of infants' sleeping health education and 15 items on a five-point scale based on the Confidence Inventory by Pharis(1978) and Legerman(1981), which was revised and supplemented to measure mothers' confidence in role performance related to infants' sleeping. The educational program for infants' sleeping health was comprised of a presentation on education for infants' sleeping, video clip(infants' sleeping and activities), and collection of educational materials(sleeping health and safety of infants and toddlers). Data were gathered through formative evaluation before the program, preliminary survey, and overall evaluation from end of February to end of April, 2011. Collected data were put to t-test, paired t-test, and ANCOVA with the Window SPSS program 13.0. The research findings were as follows: Hypothesis 1: "Experiment Group I and II that receive the educational program for infants' sleeping health will have more knowledge of infants' sleeping health than the control group that receives no such program" was tested. As a result, there were significant differences between them with Experiment Group I obtaining t=-5.79, p=.000, Experiment Group II t=-10.10, p=.000, and the control group t=-.2.04, p=.051(p<.000). Thus Hypothesis 1 was supported. Subhypothesis 1: "Experiment Group II that receives reinforced PC-based video education will have more knowledge of infants' sleeping health than Experiment Group I that receives no such education" was tested. As a result, Experiment Group II scored mean 34.5 points, which were a little higher than 33.4 points of Experiment Group I. Since there was no statistically significant difference between them, the subhypothesis was rejected(t=-1.160, p=.255). Hypothesis 2: "Experiment Group I and II that receive the educational program for infants' sleeping health will have more confidence in the performance of mother's roles than the control group that receives no such program"was tested. As a result, there was a statistically significant difference at p=.000, and Hypothesis 2 was supported. Subhypothesis 2: "Experiment Group II that receives reinforced PC-based video education will have more confidence in the performance of mother's roles than Experiment Group I that receives no such education" was tested. As a result, Experiment Group II scored mean 55.53 points, which were lower than 56.24 points of Experiment Group I. Since there was no significant difference, the subhypothesis was rejected(t=.270, p= .789). The results show that the educational program for infants' sleeping health turned out to be a very effective intervention for the better sleeping health of infants by helping the mothers increase confidence in their role performance and contributing to the formation of positive parent-child relationships. Even though the concerned subhypothesis was rejected, the fact that Experiment Group II scored higher knowledge points indicates a need for the reinforced education of such a program and accordingly the reinforcement of educational programs for first-time mothers with an approach based on diverse teaching media and methods and the development of various programs related to infant sleeping. Key word : infant, sleeping and activity cycle, parenting, babies' signals, mothers' confidence in role performance, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and infants' sleeping disorder.
