This study is intended to analyze current state and problems involving biodiversity and ecological succession of urban forest. The study subject included forests distributed in Seoul. Based on locational characteristics and vegetation diversity, the study areas were divided into core urban forest in suburb area, base urban forest in suburb area, core urban forest in downtown area and base urban forest in downtown area. Characteristics and change of vegetation structure in urban forests resulted from changes in city environments were analyzed for each type of urban forests. Regarding characteristics of vegetation structure in urban forests, the ecological change of urban forest was presumed and analyzed after causes of urban environmental changes, which is responsible for change in the vegetation structure of urban forest, were analyzed. And vegetation distribution characteristics, vegetation structure characteristics, and vegetation structure change were analyzed by each type of urban forests. The following is results of study.
First, the cause and present state of environmental change in a city were investigated. As for land cover change, land use change which are among the causes of city’s environmental change, the urban development projects by year were examined. The land readjustment project was conducted in the 1970s, the residential land development project from the 1980s to the end of 1990s and the urban development project from the late of 1990s to the 2000s. A total size of development was 165.8㎢. As for housing construction, it was mainly focused on construction of single-unit house in the initial stage of urban development, but after the 1980s, construction of apartment buildings and other multi-unit houses dramatically increased. Regarding the air pollution, one of the causes of city’s environmental change, the number of cars registered was analyzed. The number of registered cars stood at about 610,000 in 1961 but starting the 1980s, the figure increased rapidly and as a result, it reached 11,694,458 as of 2009. Among the causes of urban environmental change, the temperature went up by approx. 1.5℃ for the past 40 years and the rainfall fluctuated from year to year. The relative humidity decreased from 69.7% to 61.1%. The groundwater level went down by 0.5m between 2001 and 2009. The NO2, one of air pollutants, rose to 0.035ppm, thus exceeding the environmental standard. The acidity of rain was below pH 5.6 except the year of 1995 and 1996.
Second, the characteristics of vegetation distribution were studied for each type of urban forests in Seoul. The natural forest showed high area ratio in the core urban forest in suburb area(49.0%) and the core urban forest in downtown area(45.4%). The mixed forest was most widely distributed in the core urban forest in suburb area and the base urban forest in suburb area. The artificial forest appeared most in the base urban forest in suburb area(51.1%) and the base urban forest in downtown area(60.9%). The natural forest was most extensively distributed in the core urban forests but the urban forests located in suburb area had higher ratio of natural forests than the urban forest located in downtown area. This was because the base urban forest among the suburb urban forests had low altitude and gentler terrain than the core urban forest, accordingly being less affected by people. In addition, the Changdeok Palace and Mt. Namsan which belong to the core urban forest in downtown area were the subjects requiring consistent management and preservation.
Third, the vegetation structure of representative vegetation community for each type of urban forests in Seoul was analyzed. As for native plant's community in urban forests, the ecological succession generally stopped regardless of types. In the core urban forest in downtown area, succession from Prunus sargentii community to Sorbus alnifolia community was predicted and in the base urban forest in downtown area, successions from Quercus mongolica community to Quercus serrata community and from Quercus acutissima community to Q. mongolica community were predicted. In the case of S. alnifolia and Styrax japonica, which are highly adaptable to the urban environment, M.I.P(Mean Importance Percentage) within the colonies was 0.1~22.1% and especially, the M.I.P reached a high level in the core urban forest in downtown area. Regarding the Shannon's Diversity index by each community, the native plant's community and the non-native plant's community had 1.1493~1.2570 and 0.8832~1.2923 respectively. The urban forest in suburb area was found to have a relatively higher level of species diversity index than the urban forest in downtown area. The analysis on soil chemical properties showed that the average soil pH by each type of urban forests was between pH 4.60 and pH 4.77, thus indicating that the soil is acid soil with pH 5.0 and below. Although there was no big difference between the urban forest in suburban area and the urban forest in downtown area in terms of the soil pH, the core urban forest had higher soil pH than the base urban forest.
Fourth, the change in vegetation structure of urban forests was observed. According to the analysis on succession trend, the climax species did not appear in the native plant's community and consequently, succession stopped. In the non-native plant's community, succession to Quercus spp. community, including Q. mongolica and Q. serrata, was predicted. For the urban forest in downtown area, the ecological succession stopped. The M.I.P of S. alnifolia and S. japonica with high adaptability to the urban environment increased by 12.2%. The foreign species that were introduced due to the urban environmental change, including Magnolia obovata, Ailanthus altissima, and Amorpha fruticosa, recorded an 1.7% increase. This change was more noticeable in the urban forest in downtown area than in the urban forest in suburban area. When it comes to change in species composition, urbanization exerted an influence and thus the foreign species appeared, such as Acer palmatum, Diospyros lotus, M. obovata, Amorpha fruticosa. This change was thought to be caused by increase in urban temperature and soil acidification. There was no evidence that dried condition affected the species composition. The Shannon's diversity index slightly increased in the overall communities but it decreased by up to 0.1340 in canopy layer and under canopy layer. The Shannon's index went up in the base urban forest in downtown area and particularly, in the non-native plant's community. However, the increase of species diversity index did not put a significant influence on the ecological succession because the foreign species, like D. lotus, Alnus hirsuta, Rhus chinensis, S. alnifolia and the native species on under canopy layer, appeared. With regards to change in the soil pH, the core urban forest in suburb area displayed slight decrease from pH 5.40 to pH 4.92, the core urban forest in downtown from pH 4.73 to pH 4.72, and the base urban forest in downtown from pH 4.59 to pH 4.58 and as a result, those urban forests maintained the acid soil.
Fifth, the characteristics and change of vegetation structure in urban forest were comprehensively studied to make a conclusion about the ecological characteristics by each type of urban forests in Seoul, trend of biodiversity decrease and succession. Cause and effect of ecological change in urban forests were offered in the form of a diagram by putting the relationship among influencing factors together. The land use change, the land cover change and increasing number of cars resulted in changes in city temperature, relative humidity, groundwater level, air pollution, and acid rainfall. This urban environmental changes led to the ecological change in urban forests. Succession generally has stopped without reference to types of urban forests and vegetation communities. This trend was distinctly found in Q. spp. community, one of the native plants colonies, and the non-native plant's community located inside the city.
Sixth, ideas were proposed to manage urban forests based on the ecological state of urban forests in Seoul. In the case of Q. mongolica community which is a representative native plant's community in urban forest, the current community was thought to be appropriate, thus needing to be maintained when the present urban environment and soil acidification are considered. But, it is necessary to prevent regression of vegetation structure caused by disease and insect pest such as Q. spp wilt disease. With respect to management for species diversity increase, it was proposed to enhance the species diversity with a target of species diversity index of a control group being set at 1.2666 and to control M. obovata, A. altissima, and Pinus koraiensis that disturb the ecosystem. The foreign plant's community control was offered targeting Robinia pseudo-acacia community that is a typical type of artificial forest distributed in urban forest. The ecological succession of R. pseudo-acasia was analyzed and compared according to each topographic structure of urban forests in suburban area and urban forests in down town area. In addition, as for R. pseudo-acacia community of urban forests in suburban area, the direction of control was headed for recovering ecological integrity and naturalness. As a part of succession proceeding management, R. pseudo-acacia density control, Forest Tending Works(FTW) suspension, and introduction of vegetation recovery model were offered. It was suggested that in the case of urban forest in downtown area, succession according to the topography of urban forest in suburban area is set as a target vegetation community and then a vegetation recovery model is introduced targeting an area whose ecological succession was stopped, accordingly possible to actively recover the vegetation. Lastly, S. alnifolia, S. japonica, D. lotus, A. palmatum, A. altissima, M. obovata, and A. fruticosa, regarded as those species indicating the urban environmental changes which were identified by the analysis on characteristics of urban forest vegetation structure and change of vegetation structure, were selected as subjects for control and monitoring. In particular, it is required to prevent the spread of A. altissima, M. obovata, and A. fruticosa.
This study is meaningful in that urban forests distributed across Seoul were divided into specific categories, their characteristics were analyzed and problems with vegetation structure of urban forests were comprehensively observed through time series analysis. Additionally, this study makes a comprehensive analysis based on locational characteristics of urban environment and urban forest in Seoul and the analysis results can be utilized as basic materials which will contribute to effectively improving any problems with urban forest in the future.
This urban environmental changes led to the ecological change in urban forests. Succession generally has stopped without reference to types of urban forests and vegetation communities. This trend was distinctly found in Q. spp. community, one of the native plants colonies, and the non-native plant's community located inside the city.
