This study aims at establishing a golf course in Victoria G.C, Yeoju-gun, Gyeonggi-do, using an ecological method and presenting its process and effect. The target site is the region at 485, Songnim-ri, Ganam-myeon, Yeoju-gun, Gyeonggi-do, which was originally used for a commercial pig farm site, but left unused for the last ten years.
The recent golf course operation condition shows that as of 2010, the number of courses is gradually decreasing, and by 2015 when the number of golf courses exceeds 500, the break point for the number of golf courses in Korea, a considerable management crisis in the industry is expected. Thus, there has been various effort to maximize the profit.
The construction of ecological golf courses has become a new alternative according to the current needs of sustainability and green growth. From the planning stageof a new golf course, the ecological golf course method is being discussed in depth, and consideration is made on the existing golf courses to be renovated to become more ecological golf courses. The ecological concern has now become a key element in a high-quality golf course, and accordingly, a systematic study on the construction and method of an ecological golf course is required.
The site used to be a large-scale commercial pig farm, and for the last ten years after the disclosure of the business, thesite had been left as an unpleasant place for local residents. The project was established to create a nine-hole public golf course, which utilized such an environmentally hazard site to improve the ecological aspects. Key elements of the project includedthe issues of existing pollutants, such as the construction waste, livestock waste, and domestic waste, as well as protecting existing trees and plants, the number and size of new plants, calculating the appropriate amount of ground-cutting and determining reusable facilities. Another consideration was the efficient allocation of the basic golf course plan based on the appropriateness and functionality as a golf course.
The ecological analysis on the golf course established with the ecological method showed the following positive effects. First, the project used the area of the target site efficiently. Whereas the average area of a normal nine-hole golf course is about 150,000 pyeong, the target site used 80,000 pyeong in which all required facilities were constructed, reducing the damaged area due to the project. Second, the analysis of the land usage plan showed that the area of greens increased by 30.8%. Using the existing environmentally hazard facilities, the project increased the area of greens and transformed the site into an ecological place. Third, the amount of ground-cuttingwas reduced according to the original site preservation plan. According to the original plan, 136,000 m2 was to be damaged. However, based on the original site preservation plan, that area was down to 89,000 m2, a reduction of 47,000 m2, and accordingly, the construction cost was saved. Fourth, the project established a proactive planting plan. When planning the green, the project made effort to diversify the kinds and size of plants and trees within the course through the proactive complementary planting, resulting in increasing the ratio of green area to the total site by 28.8%. Fifth, the project transplanted the naturally growing trees in the site. The nut pine trees around 10 to 20 years old within the site were either introduced to or transplanted to the greens of the course so as to use the existing trees. Sixth, the project established the preservation plan for existing plants. Preserving existing plants is a key issue in constructing an ecological golf course, and in this project, the nut pine trees at the outer site of the golf course and the between courses were preserved and used as part of the rough. As a result the whole golf course maintained the natural landscape with the existing woods. And finally, seventh, the project preserved the animal habitat space. The existing greens for animal habitat space was preserved as they were, and an ecological water detention facility was also used as habitat space.
Victoria G.C,the target site of the project, is the first case of remodeling the ruined commercial pig farm into a public golf course (nine-hole) using an ecological method, and it is significant in that it minimized the damage of the natural environment and the existing original woods in the construction process.
