Amongst the first New cities developed in 1989, New City of Bundang is uniquely recognized as 'the second Gangnam' which is a copy of so-called term 'Gangnam' of Seoul. Although Bundang is a district of Sungnam City, according to the previous studies, city dwellers in Bundang recognize Bundang as an independent space from Sungnam City. Now, 'Bundang', generally represented as a symbol of 'Middle class city' regardless of dweller's income, is a general term transcending administrative boundaries. Moreover, the term 'Bundang' was expansively self-reproduced with the production of its own copies such as 'the second Bundang' and 'Bundang circle'. This study aims to elucidate the origin of the idea signifying the meaning of house not only as a physical space to live in but also as an abstract and exclusive boundary.
To understand the changeable meaning of house and the emergence of formerly inexistent abstract boundary of living and 'imaginary Gangnam', the current theories on city have been critically reconstructed. First, It could be conceptualized by virtue of David Harvey's theory 'Built environments' that the political economic background within Korea before 90s has been materialized as New City development. Second, the emergence of 'the dominant idea on living space' which didn't exist before 90s could be conceptualized by virtue of Henri Lefebvre's theory 'Production of Space'. Third, the phenomenon, newly emergent idea on living space transformed into an accountable object, could be conceptualized by virtue of Nitzan and Bichler's concept 'Capitalization'
The findings and implicatures of this study are as follows : First, the way representing space as an exclusive boundary through 'the second Gangnam' in Bundang new city was a social process signifying negative and ambiguous senses about 'Gangnam' into the object corresponding to 'living space'. Second, as living space has been represented as a boundary on the basis of ' imaginary Gangnam', house can be ranked through its location in boundary. Third, with the idea 'Living in house' being emerged that can be priced, which was not recognized as an accountable object until 90s, defining the boundary between regions, lifestyle and location of public facilities have become a natural matter of common interest amongst inhabitants. Fourth, the previous spatial and urban studies have been defining the meaning of house depending on a simple process that the increase of atomization of individuals corresponds to the physical exclusivity of apartment under the influence of western modernization and reckless development of apartments. However, it implies that the house locates in 'social boundary' according to 'the emergence of standard idea on comfortable living' and the formation of the imaginary 'Gangnam'. So, the beginning to comprehend the house as its location of boundaries and the hierarchy of boundaries coincides with the beginning to comprehend the affinity between Bundang New City and the imaginary 'Gangnam'. Paradoxically speaking, it was the very process producing 'the current idea on Gangnam' which didn't exist before.
