The purpose of this study was to examine the actual status and modern implication of educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty. For this, data were analyzed using the method of literature examination. Examined data were preceding studies on various educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty and such historical records as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and Gyeonggukdaejeon. Representative educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty were seodang, seowon, hyanggyo, Four Schools and Seonggyungwan. Seodang was in charge of basic education in Joseon Dynasty and its schoolmaster carried out letter education via reading, explanation and calligraphy and was in charge of building students' character by making them form basic life practices through new textbooks and life guidance. Seowon was a private educational institute and in charge of offering sacrifice to ancient sages and masters and educating Confucianism. At seowon, master lecturer and schoolmaster taught students and guided their life. In addition, via Neo-Confucianism, seowon carried out human education of harmonizing virtue and intelligence. And via moral training and evaluation, it cultivated students to have the disposition of self-discipline and ruling others. Hyanggyo corresponded to a regional secondary educational institution which received governmental supports and was in charge of educating local people to purify their customs via the distribution of Confucian ways of thinking. Its instructors of professors, discipliners and guides enlightened people via sohak-oriented teaching and tried to provide personal ability-based education via lecturing, attendance checking and performance evaluation. Four Schools were educational institutions established in the suburb and middle part of Seoul and its education was carried out by instructors dispatched from Seonggyungwan. Professors and discipliners were in charge of Confucian moral education via basic elemental knowledge, the study on Chinese classics and poems, composition of poetry, recitation and epistles. In addition, as a method of evaluation of lecturing and composition of Confucian scriptures, it was in charge of cultivating would-be governmental officials and preparing students for the examination of secondary educational institutions. Seonggyungwan was the highest educational institution and government appointed its instructors. Instructors at Seonggyungwan refer to daesaseong, dongjisa, jisa, jikgang, baksa, hakjeong, haklok and hakyu. Instructors at Seonggyungwan taught the road of the Great Learning and the ideology of Confucianism on the basis of nine curricula system (gujaebeop). Via the lector of the Four Books and the Three Classics, it carried out the education of holy men and noble men. In addition, by implementing the system of gogang, jaesul and wonjeom, they were in charge of cultivating human resources. The actual status of educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty, discussed above, can be summarized as follows: First, the educational aim of educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty was to cultivate human resources for the country. Educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty carried out its education of cultivating governmental officials with the basic aim of 'the cultivation of administrators'. Via this education, they played the role of cultivating governmental officials who were necessary for the times, beyond understanding letters and having thorough knowledge on the Confucian ideology. The cultivation of governmental officials basically refers to the learning for the application to the state examination. And based on the understanding of letters and self-training, students were educated to reach the state of self-control. Its concrete modalities were strict life guidance education carried out at various schools, and evaluation systems including the system of wonjeom. Second, the educational contents and methods at educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty can be classified into two: (1) Educational institutions made students understand letters and extend its meanings, thus describing it and getting familiar with Confucian ideology. Lecturing (gang) is a traditional method of education of which focus is on reading sentences in a loud voice and questioning & answering with the principles of righteousness and logics. Lecturing-oriented reading attached great importance not to extensive reading but to careful reading and pursued thorough learning in which if one understood learned contents completely, then he could advance into next step. Students had to acquire knowledge not as contents but as firsthand experience and make it their own part. Then, they could advance into next stage. This method was meaningful in that it made students carry out personal learning according to their abilities, (2) Curricula in Joseon Dynasty were focused on the students' cultivation of humanity. The characteristic of harmony between seasons and curricula seemed to have the values of education that taking natural providence and human characteristics into account. They attempted to harmonize learners' interests and efficiency appropriately and maximize educational effects, while making them live with nature. They taught students to improve the efficiency of learning and keep their composure in the nature. Third, educational institutions in Joseon Dynasty recognized the difference between public and private education and emphasized their mutual supplement. Major aim of public education was to cultivate human resources (governmental officials) who were necessary for the country and fully committed to Confucian ideology. Its educational contents were the Four Books and the Five Classics and its educational methods were lecturing, reading and writing under the strict supervision of government. However, such private institutions as seodang and seowon were not controlled by government in its establishment, educational contents and methods, and students, thus enjoying great self-regulation. Such public institutions as hyanggyo and Four Schools accepted children of nobles and scholars. Seonggyungwan accepted only the persons who passed the preliminary examination of civil service, such as the examination of saengwon and jinsa. However, a private institution of seodang accepted children of scholars and common people together without discrimination. So, the schooling of students at seodang could not but be different. In this vein, it was impossible for a schoolmaster to teach students uniformly. In other words, nearly all the course of education, such as establishment, curricula and evaluation, was decided by the self-regulation of schoolmaster. Ironically, these characteristics of seodang seemed to make the self-regulated education possible. At seowon, all the staff, including its head person, educated students with the moral philosophy of Neo-Confucianism, thus making them venerate ancient sages and rejecting state examination-oriented learning. On the other hand, it tried to cultivate human resources who taking the lead in community. In other words, by making students venerate ancient sages and masters who took the lead in the diffusion and distribution of Neo-Confucianism, seowon had students get off state examination- and success-oriented learning. In addition, by making students get full knowledge on Confucian ideology via the study of Confucian classics, seowon seemed to make students play the leading role in the construction of community.
