Silica particles have been studied as tire fillers to improve tire properties such as rolling resistance, wet grip, and abrasion resistance. However, when pure silica particles are mixed with rubber, the silica easily agglomerates due to the strong filler-filler interaction and weak filler-rubber interaction, resulting in poor tire performance. This is because of hydrophilicity of silica particles caused by silanol groups. Therefore, the surface of silica should be modified with silane coupling agent for making chemical bonding between silica and rubber and changing property of silica from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity. In this study, silica surface was modified with TESPT and alkyl silane at various temperatures and analyzed by FT-IR and 29Si CP-MAS NMR. Modified silica with TESPT and alkyl silane was applied to rubber composite for testing tire performances. Rubber composite contained modified silica with TESPT showed improved performances than that contained unmodified silica and TESPT. Especially, abrasion resistance of rubber composite was improved as increasing TESPT amount. The result showed sulfur chain of TESPT enhanced chemical and physical interaction between silica and rubber. Hydrophilicity of silica particles was efficiently changed by chemically modified with alkyl silane. The rubber composite containing chemical modification silica with alkyl silane showed improved dispersion of the silica particles. However, when using physically mixed silica with alkyl silane, the silica was mainly located on the surface and agglomerated. When modified silica with mixed silane coupling agents using TESPT and alkyl silane was used for the tire filler, rolling resistance and wet grip were improved better than the case when modified silica with only TESPT was used.
