This study have investigated to find the effect of step length symmetry in subjects with performance weight bearing training and to understand the relationship between step length and walking speed in hemiplegic patients. The subjects were 15 patients hemiplegia caused by stroke, at least 6 months poststroke, unilateral weakness, understand the movements of this study and have no difficulty in the conduct. Tests were carried out from December. 2010 to March. 2011. They were participated weight bearing training for 8 weeks, and before and after evaluation was measured by using GAITRite. The subjects was measured separately at their self-selected and fastest safe speeds to collect spatiotemporal parameters before and after weight bearing training. Step length symmetry was quantified by using a step length ratio (SLR) defined as shorter step length divided by longer step length, Based on their SLR, 2 groups of subjects with differing step length symmetry were identified. Relationships between step length symmetry and walking speed of hemiplegic patients with performance weight bearing training were identified. The results do this study we are summarized as follows: 1. Left and right step length between pre-training and post-training in each self-selected and fastest safe speeds was significantly increased(p<.05). 2. Gait velocity between pre-training and post-training in each self-selected and fastest safe speeds was significantly increased(p<.05). 3. Relationships between step length ratio and walking speed of hemiplegic patients with performance weight bearing training were significantly related. According the results of this study, the weight bearing training performance for 8 weeks is effect on improvement of gait ability in hemiplegic patients with stroke. The strong relationship between the patterns of step length symmetry and walking speed may be providing important variable on evaluation of gait velocity.
