During the recent earthquake, such as the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake in Taiwan, the 2008 Sichuansheng Earthquake in China, and 2011 Tohoku earthquake, many concrete frame structures experienced substantial damage. Older low- to mid-rise concrete and masonry buildings were particularly vulnerable to those earthquakes. The seismic performance of concrete buildings during such earthquakes generally depends on reinforcement details, building shape, applied design provisions, etc. Insufficient details can cause unexpected structural failure during a large earthquake event. Most low-rise buildings in low-to-moderate seismic zones and older buildings in high seismic zones have been designed primarily for gravity loads. Because such buildings have less stringent details than those required in a high seismic zone. Therefore, this study intends to develop hexagonal masonry that can raise the resistance of existing rectangular masonry wall against lateral force by preventing lateral straight joint occurrence and develop effective masonry structure that can be used for seismic designing and seismic reinforcement in new construction and building remodeling by analyzing the behavioral characteristics of the masonry wall used in the developed masonry and the shear strength increase effects. To investigate the beneficial effect of Hexagonal block shape on the seismic response of infilled RC frames, four half-scale, single story, single bay, frame specimen were tested. The parameters investigated included the strength of infilled walls using hexagonal blocks with respect to that of the reinforcement, the lateral load history. The experimental results indicate that hexagonal block infilled walls can significantly improve the performance of RC frames. The only bare frame tested exhibited a fairy ductile behavior with, however significant shear cracks developed in the beam-to-column joints. In the case of an infilled frame, the nonlinear behavior was usually initiated by the cracking of the infill. This study indicates that for a frame that is properly designed for strong seismic loads, hexagonal block infilled walls will most likely have beneficial influences on its performance. It also indicates that reinforced hexagonal block infilled walls can be potentially used to improve the performance of existing nonductile frames. For this purpose, should be developed to enhance the shear resistance of nonductile columns to avoid irreparable damage and catastrophic failure. Further studies should be conducted to develop design guidelines for engineered hexagonal block infilled walls. These should include the development of strengthening methods for hexagonal block infilled walls to increase their ductility and energy-dissipation capability.
