ABSTRACT A study on teaching methods of trumpet -Focused on beginner- Lee Kyu-ho Major in Music Education Graduate School of Education Kwan Dong University Directed by Professor Sung ki deuk This thesis discusses how to teach beginner of trumpet playing trumpet players, reviews the history of trumpet, its structure and principles and types of trumpets which is the basis for playing, and describes guidelines in order for beginner players to select the instrument, a mouthpiece and a textbook for playing the trumpet when the beginner players come into contact with the trumpet. Also, it studied the skill of breathing, blowing, fingering, and how to use tongue when playing the trumpet, and also discussed the right playing posture. When tracing the origin of a trumpet, it is known that its structure was quite simple, and that it was used as a signal of religious and secular behaviors. From the start of a demilune, the early trumpet to jink, a crook system, and the invention of valves which brings about enormous influences and development to the whole brass wind instruments, the history of the trumpet is considered as important to the history of brass wind instruments. With development of the trumpet, educational methods of practical techniques has continued to develop, and many leaders on the trumpet are suggesting systematic teaching methods with clear theoretical background based on academic researches in various ways in order to foster great players. Therefore, as a conclusion of this thesis, it aims to suggest teaching methods of playing the trumpet by considering and researching references and writings of those who are great trumpet players and also great theorists and based on the author's experience on playing the trumpet and teaching it. First, by introducing books written by several players and theorists, it suggests how beginner players can select the right textbook appropriate for their capacity. Second, though it is very important to have good command of right breathing, there have been many difficulties for teachers to teach how to breath due to difficult terms which are hard for beginners to understand in most trumpet textbooks. But, this thesis enables to teach the right breathing way by explaining various breathing methods easily and in detail. Third, the most condition for making a good sound is up to how to blow (Embouchure). At present, trumpet textbooks for teachers or beginners explain the embouchure too uniformly or too difficultly, making quite many troubles. The author explained the theoretical background through experience until now and various references and created how to teach the method based on Arban's style of puckering lips. Fourth, when playing the wrong fingering, there are sometimes cases of not pressing a piston with fingers or not following the speed when playing music of a fast tempo. Therefore, the author created and suggested the right fingering method based on experience of the author's own. Fifth, it suggested a plan for practicing how to use tongue and for teaching how to play the instrument by considering references. How to use tongue is one of the most important parts in playing the instrument, and it is a playing skill which players should master. It suggested the teaching method of how to use tongue in various ways based on the author's experience and by considering many kinds of references in order to teach beginners easily. Sixth, the author has created how to take the right posture when playing the trumpet and how to teach the method based on experience until now. It helps explain the theoretical background and teach it easily by considering many kinds of references. Teaching method of trumpet targeting beginner players can produce good results only when there are competent and professional teachers and a thorough plan for teaching. Effective and systematic teaching methods which are suitable for the age of learners and can help them practically should be researched by researching and developing newer teaching methods and textbooks from now on.
