ABSTRACT A Case Study on Hikikomori(acute social withdrawal) - Focus on Korean and Japanese - Kosuge Yuko Department of Social Welfare Graduate School Soongsil University This study has a purpose on searching the life characteristics of Hikikomori clients and comparative influence of internal and external factors. From December 2010 to 2011, three interviews were conducted for data collecting - one Japanese and two Korean. The data was analyzed qualitatively on the base of Stake theory. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the clients' Hikikomori lives seem to be negative at the first glance but they have a mind, wanting to go out, and if they have a chance, they desire to go out. Second, in the all three cases, the clients and family had conflicts and problems. Third, the common inner cause of clients was that all of the three cases have negative way of thinking. The three cases experienced social chaos during their adolescence. Another common feature was that they are sincere and kind to others. Fourth, the cause of Hikikomori was influenced by combination of internal and external factors. Especially, we could confirm that the main cause of external factor was conflict on family roles between family members and main cause of internal factor was weakness of willingness on purpose and personal relationships. Fifth, clients with Hikikomori reunion with society, when they have positive stimulus. However, if they do not receive positive stimulus, the clients return to Hikikomori. The vicious cycles continue. In the three cases, the each period of Hikikomori is different, but all three have a common : easily going back to a previous state when supporting relationship is weaken. Based on the results of this study, we suggest for social welfare practice and policies as follows; First, from the perspective of the internal factors, we should trust the clients' escaping possibility and potential from Hikikomori. Understanding the clients has the desire to go out and power to solve the problem is the most important preparation for intervention. In addition, it is also important to inform the clients' family about Hikikomori problems and effective approach to the problems. Second, to help Hikikomori to go outside, we should help them to set up goals for their life. As the results shown in this case analysis, Hikikomori clients go outside, when there were some opportunities or goals. If the Hikikomori status was prolonged, going out becomes more difficult to the clients so it is crucial to intervene actively at the initial stage. Third, the clients will need a program that helps them foster their communication skills. As shown in previous Hikikomori studies, the clients experience many problems when they communicate. The result of this study also supported that Hikikomori clients have problems in their communication skills. In order to help the clients to go out into the society and associate with people well, a structured support system must be in place which enables the clients learn communication skills. Fourth, an integrated approach for family is required. It is significant that the clients' family to be involved in enthusiastically to solve the problem. Since the clients can only possibly meet the family at the Hikikomori status, the family's appropriate response and understanding are required. Fifth, there is need to develop various and appropriate programs for Hikikomori. In Japan, approach to the Hikikomori clients is difficult, and there is no suitable alternative, so the number of Hikikomori clients does not decrease. It is necessary to develop various programs and administrative interventions to support Hikikomori. Especially, since Hikikomori cannot go out from their house, programs by using SNS(Social Networking Services), social activities, including cultural experiences or volunteering, and also vocational training programs are required to be developed. Sixth, henceforth, more investigations and developed studies are demanded according to the researchers who are interested in the Hikikomori study. In Japan, the Hikikomori problems became serious social problems, but effective countermeasures for Hikikomori have not been found yet. This is because the aggressive understanding and intervene effort for Hikikomori is not enough. Although it is difficult to access to Hikikomori, we should take care of the Hikikomori clients and study them continuously. In Korea, the problems of Hikikomori are not perceived seriously as in Japan, and also the recognition for Hikikomori is weaker. Thus, the related statistics and researches have to be provided.
