The increasing complexity and flexibility of modern land use requires that cadastres need an improved capacity to manage the third dimension. As the world is per definition not static, there also will be needs in relation to the representation of the temporal dimension either integrated with the spatial dimensions or as separate attributes. To endeavor the other way, thus a new viewpoint of cadastral systems will be more important than the previous approaches and solutions. The main concern at the moment the studies about 4D cadastral systems need to be accomplished with temporal dimension departing from a framework of earlier studies. For that reason, the purpose of this research is to endeavor desirable directions of 4D cadastral system in future by examining and analyzing cases as temporal dimensions and conceptual and theoretical approaches of 4D cadastral system. The outcomes of this research summarized as follows. First, the theoretical background of 4D cadastral system was reviewed in terms of multi-dimensional cadastral system, temporal dimension of cadastres, temporal approaches of cadastres, the review of advanced researches and the approach framework. To understand multi-dimensional cadastral system, a definition of 4D cadastral system, the relations with dimensions and availability of multi-dimensional cadastres are reviewed. temporal dimension are reviewed as to a meaning of time and space, theoretical principles of temporal database and structural principles of time topology. For reviewing temporal approach of cadastres, it was conducted in terms of change based approach, time based approach and representation of temporal data. numerous researches are reviewed in relation with 4D cadastral system in domestic and foreign countries and the approach framework is completed for limitations and desirable directions can be indicated based on discussed before. Second, the applicable cases of 4D cadastre were analyzed focusing on the change of dynamic boundary of a river, the movement of time-sharing and the registration of time-based facilities and reviewed limitations. In other words, around SeokJangNi museum was designated as a case of the change of dynamic boundary of a river, around Gongju Hanok villages was designated as a case of the movement of time-sharing and Geumsung-dong river in Gongju-Si was designated as a case area of the registration of time-based facilities and reviewed. Third, the desirable directions of 4D cadastral system are reviewed with regard to not only institutional, technical directions but also legal directions. based on the analysis of case study area the following points for improvement direction has been formulated. ① institutional directions : setting up the cooperative systems of land administration department, transformation of the public records for 3D/4D registration objects and a reform of curriculum for improving practical skills; ② technical directions : visualization of maps and representation of the history through development representation models for time series relations, development and application of survey method in accord with acquisition of information in 3D/4D and efficiency of KLIS considering identifiers; ③ legal directions : supplementation of legal system for 4D cadastre, survey and registration of terms and revision of registration details and supplementation of conflict matters from a legal point of view.
