This study has been conducted to explore the family therapy cases for schizophrenia patients and their families, grasp a concrete understanding of the process, and examine their experience during the family therapy. The cases that have been used in this study are series of cases named ‘family therapy for schizophrenia patients and their families,' and qualitative case study approach was judged most appropriate among the various methods of qualitative research and was used for this study, since each cases have boundaries of time and space. Through qualitative case study approach, we attempted to understand the subjective significance and experience of the participants centered on the issues that manifested in the set of processes composing an event, and used Prochaska and Norcross's transtheoretical model as the framework for analysis regarding what process of change the participants have experiences through the process called ‘family therapy'. Moreover, the relationship between the extracted categories were analyzed using the methods of networks and matrixes proposed by Miles and Huberman and schematized the concepts discovered from the analysis. The data of this study are secondary data of 7 cases of family therapy counseling conducted by one family therapist which were used in analysis. All cases were an attempt to treat the schizophrenia patients and their families, and the therapy approach have been made centered on the MRI interactional model, Bowen's family systems model. The results of the analysis regarding the first problem, ‘how was the process of family therapy experienced by the schizophrenia patients and their families?' are as follows. In this study the results have been recorded in chronological composition that describes the process in which case study is conducted in the order of the time. In other words, the cases were reviewed generally to find important themes occurring in the overall process of family therapy, and as a result of categorizing the motivation to participate in the family therapy to end of the therapy produced 25 sub-categories and 8 categories. Specifically, it could be categorized to (before the therapy) ‘facing the disorder,' ‘pain to be carried together', (therapy starts) ‘decide to participate in family therapy', (assessment) ‘tough struggle for the family', (initial stage) ‘a step forward for a change', (intermediate stage) ‘not an easy journey', (late stage) ‘small but big change' and (end of therapy) 'end of a long journey'. The results of analysis for the second problem, ‘what processes of change have the schizophrenia patients and their families experienced during the family therapy?'are as follows. This study found what behavioral traits are demonstrated in the schizophrenia patients and their family's experience of the changing process according to the flow of the time, in other words, five stages of the transtheoretical model. As a result, the pre-contemplation stage displayed ‘blaming,' ‘denial,' and ‘refusal of therapy.' At the contemplation stage, behavioral traits such as ‘acceptance', ‘efforts to understand' and ‘making justifications' were displayed. Then at preparation stage, ‘seeking advice', ‘trial and error' and ‘discomfort' manifested followed by ‘giving a try even if unfamiliar', ‘starting with small things', ‘no turning back' and ‘placing in each other's shoes' during the action stage. In the current situation where clinical studies on family therapy of schizophrenia patients and their families are seriously lacking, this study carries uniqueness on topic and the subjects compared to existing preceding studies by attempting to help gain deeper understanding on overall process of family therapy from the start to finish in the perspectives of the schizophrenia patients and their families and interpreting the subjective meaning regarding their experience. In addition, diverse interpretations on the therapeutic responses that the client may exhibit during the therapy have been proposed through the categorizing process of changes of study participants with accordance to flow of the time, which brings more practical implications in counseling and therapy. Based on these results of the study, proposal can be summarized as follows. Firstly, there is a need for development and implementation of a program in a form that is easily approachable, while the services in the form of counseling and therapy for the schizophrenia patients and their families is important Considering the misunderstandings and prejudices about schizophrenia, the culture of saving one's face that makes it difficult for the patients and family members to personally ask for social help to solve family problems, and weak information system that does not know almost anything about the ways to get professional advice, there is a need to diversify the applications of family therapy to various forms of service that guarantees both anonymity and popular appeal. Secondly, the subjective experiences of the participants provided by the results of this study may serve as practical and specific basic data for the development of aforementioned services and programs. Thirdly, the changes of the participants that may manifest on the site of family therapy carries respective characteristics and uniqueness, and the change is a difficult process in which the speeds are slow and sometimes even regresses. Therefore, the clinicians who will proceed the future counseling and therapy shall refrain from expecting attitudes for unified and fragmentary stages during the change process as well as jumping to conclusions and prejudices. Fourth, we find that the MRI interactional model, Bowen's family systems model is effective in the counseling to help schizophrenia patients and their families. Thus, these two models' principles and concepts can be applied in similar family cases in the future. Key words: case study,
