Cold air on sloping surfaces flows down to the valley bottom in mountainous terrain at calm and clear nights. Existing models assume the cold air flow might be the same as the water flow and try to estimate the temperature drop due to the cold air accumulation at a given location which can be determined by the water-like free drainage. However, in case of a closed catchment whose outlet is blocked by man-made obstacles like banks and roads, the free drainage assumption is not valid anymore, because the cold air fills up the bottom first. An empirical model was developed to quantitatively estimate the effect of cold pool on nocturnal temperature in closed catchments. In this model, a closed catchment is treated like “a vessel”, and a digital elevation model (DEM) was used to calculate the maximum capacity of the cold pool formed in a closed catchment. Cold air accumulation potential, originally in dimensionless unit, was converted to get volume unit. A topographical variable named “shape factor”, which is easily calculated as the ratio of the cold air accumulation potential across the whole catchment area to the maximum capacity of the cold pool, was introduced to describe the relative size of temperature drop at a wider range of catchment shapes. The shape factor is then used to simulate the density profile of cold pool formed in a given catchment based on a hypsometric equation. The cold lake module was incorporated with the existing model (Chung et al., 2006) to form a new model for predicting minimum temperature distribution over closed catchments. This model was applied to Akyang valley, a typical closed catchment of 53 km2 area in the southern skirt of Mt. Jiri National Park with operational 12 automated weather stations, and tested for the feasibility of delineating the temperature pattern accurately at cold pool forming nights in May 2011. Overall, improved results in simulating the spatial pattern of lower temperature at the valley bottom were obtained by this method as was confirmed from thermal images scanned across the valley at dawn of 17 May 2011. In addition, temperature estimation error was substantially decreased by this method from 1.30 to 0.71 °C in the root mean square error at the 10 low-lying stations, showing the feasibility of this method for the site-specific freeze and frost warning.
This method was used to produce daily temperature surfaces at the 30m grid cell resolution over Akyang valley for 10 years from October 2001 to September 2011. A thermal time based phenology model, which was tuned for a local pear species, was driven by daily temperature data for the 10 years to calculate yearly budburst and flowering dates at each grid cell. Inter-annual variation in the calculated flowering dates was consistent with the observed dates at 8 pear orchards in Akyang valley during the recent 10 years, showing a feasibility of the site-specific prediction and management of weather related risks in fruits production.
