The synthetic diamond falls into category of industrial diamonds and gemstone. For the industrial purpose, the diamond is used for cutting tools and polishing. It has become more and more important in it's value nowadays. If the diamond size is smaller than 104㎛, it is called normal diamond powder, and if smaller than 38㎛, it is called super fine diamond. Super fine diamond is 10 times more expensive than normal one. Till recently, people synthesize the diamond by grinding, addition third element method, and chemical vapor deposition. But these are hard to assemble and the production is low. In this study, we assemble existing metal-catalyzed disk and Zn plated metal-catalyzed in one cell using cubic press(Φ420) in the low pressure condition to synthesize super fine diamond.
Meanwhile, the gemstone is grown by single crystal and color enhancement of natural brown diamond is done by HPHT process. But after the HPHT process, diamond surface turn to graphite and the there is problem of the anvil. Therefore, in this study, in unstable field in P-T diagram of diamond for color enhancement of natural brown diamond.
First, the existing metal-catalyzed disk and Zn plated metal-catalyzed disk are subjected to 5.7, 6.0, 6.6, 7.1, 7.5, 10.6 ㎬ pressure by HPHT method and the quantity, particle size, and shape, and phase are determined by TGA-DTA, Microstructure analysis, Micro-Raman respectively. Synthetic diamond and graphite mixed powders undergo exothermic reaction at 750℃. We succeeded in synthesizing 3㎛ super fine diamond using existing metal-catalyzed disk by applying < 7.5 ㎬ pressure. On the other hand, 1.5㎛ super fine diamond was synthesized in whole pressure condition(5.7∼10.6 ㎬) by using Zn plated metal-catalyzed disk. The diamond shapes appear hexahedron in 10.6 ㎬ and whereas it appear tetrahedron in 5.7∼7.5 ㎬ pressure condition by using existing metal-catalyzed disk, octahedral in 6.0 ㎬; tetrahedron in 5.7∼10.6 ㎬ by use Zn plated metal-catalyzed.
Secondly, we use natural brown diamond in condition of 1450∼2800℃, 3∼5.8 ㎬, 30sec∼15min by HPHT process for color enhancement in the low pressure condition. In the 1500∼2800℃, 3.5∼5.8 ㎬ condition of color enhancement by HPHT process, the diamond surface turned to graphite. Finally we make the grade color enhancement of natural brown diamond in 1450℃, 5.8 ㎬ condition of HPHT process and no graphite appeared. In the unstable field in diamond P-T diagram, at first the diamond surface appeared diamond like carbon, and then it is turn to graphite for the whole diamond surface. It is responsible for loosing diamond weight. But if we cutting diamond after HPHT process, it can decrease the loss of diamond by repolishing.
