This study aims at contributing to understanding of depositional environments of the Lower Ordovician Mungok Formation. Field works for the study results in revision of the geologic map in the western part of the Yeongwol area (7x9 km2) and detailed sedimentological logs of ten major outcrop sections. Based on the field data, seven facies were identified according to the lithology (grain size) and sedimentary structures; pebbly limestone conglomerate (Cp), packstone to grainstone (P/G), laminated lime mudstone (LMl), flaser-bedded lime mudstone (LMf), planar limestone-shale alternation (Lp-S), nodular limestone-shale alternation (Ln-S), and calcareous shale (Sc). They can be classified into seven facies associations (FAs) that represent carbonate ramp environments. FA 1 consists mainly of LMf and represents lagoonal environments. FA 2 comprises thick beds of P/G with chert and was formed in shoal environments. FA 3 is characterized by thick beds of P/G and minor intercalated thin beds of Sc and L-S, representing the shoreface environments. FA 4, FA 5, and FA 6 are represented by a meter-scale shallowing-upward cycles and represents inner to mid ramp, mid to outer ramp, and outer ramp environments, respectively. Calcareous shale and intercalated thin limestones of FA 7 formed under deepwater conditions of outer ramp to basinal environments. Vertical change of the FAs indicates that the developments of the depositional environments can be divided into two stages. Early stage corresponds to basal and lower members and represents shallow environments which consist of limestone dominated facies. Late stage is represented by middle and upper members and was relatively deep environments which comprise mixed sediments of shale and carbonate. Correlatable strata and lateral thickness variation of the FAs in the study area indicate different topographic relief of seafloor, implying that center of basin might have been located in the northern part of the study area rather than the southern part
