Art is always close to our lives, and many schools in the world now treat art study as one of the independent study subjects. Art education has been changed from expression function based to more creativity and understanding based education. In order to compliment the expression focused art that was for the artists, a creativity focused art education for the children has appeared. Since the launching of the Sputnik, DBAE has surfaced asking questions on the creativity centered art education and seeking various possibilities on artistic experiences and understandingswith a new vision. DBAE has been incorporated to the 6th educational curriculum development and continue to the 7th and 2007's new educational curriculum.
This research was conducted to study the recognition level of DBAE and condition of the applied DBAE at the site of elementary schools, and also to examine the differences amongst background variablessuch as years of teaching experiences, major studies, and DBAE related knowledge learning through. This was conducted throughsurveys while DBAE was adopted to 2007's new educational curriculum development and expanded to all grades. For this, nine (9) elementary schools out of fifty seven (57) elementary schools from Kimhae, Kyeongsandnam-do were selected randomly, and two hundred seventy (270) homeroom teachers of the nine elementary schools were the subjects who have answered the surveys. Survey was consisted of twenty five (25) questions in total covering three areas of planning, class management, and performance/evaluation.
The elementary school teacher's recognition for DBAE and condition of DBAE after its application that were found out from the survey analysis are as followings.
First, elementary school teachers have answered that learning occurs when teachers provide assistance and encouragement during art class. This is congruent to DBAE's idea. As DBAE claims, various study materials were provided along with textbook centered activities in order to cause self-initiatives and to increase the expression needs. Upon teaching creative work, art materials and technique were taught, and they thought teacher's demonstration was needed also. Additionally, they valued the results more than the process, thus showing same opinion as DBAE.
Second, therewere significant outcome from the background variables such as role of teachers, contents of the art class, and condition of existing or non-existing art history class, therefore we were able to learn that the teachers who have majored the art are the ones that were practicing DBAE better than the ones who have not majored art. In the experiences of teachers, there were significant outcome in the areas of educational curriculum management method, teaching method for art appreciation class, and support areas from the board of education for effective art class. There was no difference in the learning DBAE related knowledge.
Most teachers have answered that they did not know well about DBAE. However, they were indirectly influenced in the areas of teaching creative artwork, educational curriculum management, and teacher's role as they were experiencing through the 6th, 7th, and 2007's revised educational curriculum. However, in the art appreciation area, they agreed with creativity centered art class. Those who thought that teaching all four areas was the right choice were not able to teach all the areas due to lack of time and expertise. There were no major differences in the background variables. This means that teachers were not able to practice accordinglydue to environmental factors even though they were well aware of DBAE.
To improve this, a study on the specific teaching models and materials of the DBAE, and seminars that look into how DBAE was incorporated in to the curriculum that are used byteachers must be done. Additionally, there are needs for teachers to change their recognition towards the art class along with improvement of the educational environment.
