HF (High Frequency) communication refers to a communication method using frequencies ranging from 3 to 30MHz. Since it is capable of communicating long distances without relaying facilities, it is still required even though there exists other high capacity, high speed telecommunications. For example, emergency communications between inland and islands, control of vessels from the coast, communications between different vessels and prediction of radio waves are some of the cases that show the need for HF communications. Also, in the military communications, its need has been emphasized and has been proven during the War in Iraq, which developed countries including the U.S participated in.
On the other hand, due to changing of usable frequencies according to irregularities in the ionosphere and the issue regarding the skip zone which is inevitably formed when using HF communications, the discouragement of the use of HF within the Korean military has increased. The Korean military has acknowledged the importance of HF communications and therefore they are persistently trying to overcome these limitations but there is lack of systematic approach to the core of the problem. In fact, in 1996, the Korean military suggested the HF communication method when implementing the new AM radio(PRC-950K) but there have been no additional reports on these issues.
The most limiting factor when using HF communications, skip zones, are zones where both the maximum reach of the ground wave and the minimum reach of the volume wave does not connect. During World War Ⅱ, foreign nations partly solved this problem by using NVIS(Near Vertical Incident Sky-wave), radiating the signal at a high angle in order to communicate short distances but actual measurements of its use has not been reported.
Another issue involving HF communications is that the usable frequency changes according to irregularities in the ionosphere. Foreign nations have developed programs that predict the irregularities of HF communications, and applied them from the planning stage in order to increase its efficiency. However, the actual data collected within Korea to verify the effectiveness of each programs have not been done.
The purpose of this thesis is to promote the use of HF communications in Korea by verifying the possibility of overcoming skip zones through NVIS communications and by verifying the applicability of HF communication prediction programs.
In this thesis, we have first conducted pre-research, then conducted field experiments, and finally analyzed collected technical data. The actual measurements of the HF communications have been completed in three locations, Daejeon, Chung-buk Jeong-pyung, and Kang-won-do Hyeon-ri, using four types of antennas including horizontal dipole antenna and imported NVIS antenna. The use of predicting programs within the Korean terrain has been verified while accounting for the HF's frequency irregularities, caused by the changes in the ionosphere. It has also been analyzed while comparing it to ADD data.
We have concluded that the limitations of the skip zones can be partly resolved using the NVIS and the predicting programs are applicable for Korean terrain also. By utilizing the results of our research, it is possible to partly overcome HF communications' limitations. Also, by using the frequency predicting programs the reliability of HF communication can be maximized. Because many flaws can be fixed, the potentials of the HF communication are huge especially in the specific communications area.
