The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between moral emotion and helping behavior of children and adolescents focused on empathy, guilt and gratitude. The following are the research questions for this study: First, do children and adolescents' moral emotion(empathy, guilt and gratitude) and helping behavior significantly vary by their general features (gender, grade and religion)? Second, how much relative influence does moral emotion(empathy, guilt and gratitude) of children and adolescents have on helping behavior? Third, what is the mediated effect of gratitude concerning the influence of children and adolescents' empathy on their helping behavior? Fourth, what is the mediated effect of gratitude concerning the influence of children and adolescents' guilt on their on helping behavior?
For this study, participants, comprising total 1,043 students of 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th grades from elementary, middle and high schools based in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, were surveyed on empathy, guilt, gratitude and helping behavior. Of 1,043 copies of questionnaire, 938 valid sets were selected and statistically analyzed through frequency analysis, mean and standard deviation, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation, stepwise multiple regression analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis, on SPSS Win 12.0.
The main findings of this study are as follows: Firstly, gender among children and adolescents' general features had a significant influence on empathy, guilt of moral emotions and helping behavior. In other words, compared to male students, female students were marked by greater level of empathy, guilt and helping behavior. However, gender did not have significant influence on gratitude. By the age of children and adolescents, all three moral emotions - empathy, guilt and gratitude - and helping behavior varied significantly. In case of moral emotions, high school students had the highest score on empathy, whereas elementary school students had the highest score on guilt and gratitude. In case of helping behavior, elementary school students were marked with the highest score. By religion, moral emotions of empathy and gratitude and helping behavior significantly varied. Children and adolescents with religion showed higher level of empathy and gratitude and helping behavior than those without religion.
Secondly, the moral emotions(empathy, guilt and gratitude) of children and adolescents had a significant influence on their helping behavior. To be more concrete, the effect on the helping behavior of elementary school students was found to be in order of empathetic concern, gratitude, perspective taking and religion. The effect on the helping behavior of middle school students was found to be in order of guilt, perspective taking, fantasy, religion and empathetic concern. The effect on the helping behavior of high school students was found to be in order of perspective taking, gratitude, guilt and fantasy.
Thirdly, gratitude was found to have partial mediated effects concerning the influence of empathy on helping behavior. Fourth, gratitude was found to have partial mediated effects concerning the influence of guilt on helping behavior and had complete mediated effects concerning the influence of guilt on donation.
This study has examined the significant difference between children and adolescents' sympathy, guilt and helping behavior in moral emotion by general characteristics(gender, grade and religion), and investigated the relative influence of sympathy, guilt and gratitude in moral emotion that influence the children and adolescents' helping behavior. This also has verified mediated effects of gratitude that children and adolescents' sympathy and guilt influence the helping behavior. As a result, the sympathy, guilt and helping behavior showed the significant difference by gender, grade and religion, and sympathy, guilt and gratitude in moral emotion influenced the children and adolescents' helping behavior. Also, gratitude was found to have mediated effects concerning the influence of empathy on helping behavior.
