Benthic diatoms are a primary producer in stream ecosystem and paly an important role in ecosystem structure and function. Their taxonomic diversity, short life cycle, and sensitivity to environmental changes have brought in an increasing interest for them to use in water quality assessment. Although benthic diatoms occur in a broad geographic range, their optimum and tolerant ranges may vary with regions with specific climate, physiography, and environmental conditions. Therefore, a suitable water quality assessment requires a detailed understanding of ecology and characteristic biogeographic distribution of benthic diatoms. This study was conducted to understand benthic diatom ecology and distribution and factors to affect them in Korean streams/rivers, and to test and improve a biological water quality assessment method (Trophic Diatom Index), which was developed in England. Benthic diatom species composition and distribution were analyzed in relation with diverse variables, such as stream location (altitude), riparian land cover/use types, current velocity, and water quality, in 720 study sites nation-wide. In total, 531 diatom taxa were observed at all study sites. Cluster analysis classified all 720 sites into four (or eight) groups based on diatom species composition. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that altitude, land cover/use types, current velocity, electrical conductivity, and nutrient levels explained a significant amount of the variation in the composition of benthic diatom assemblages. At the national scale, a downstream ecological gradient was manifest, from fast-flowing, mostly oligotrophic highland streams to slow-flowing, mostly eutrophic lowland rivers. Reference streams selected in this study were characterized as mountain streams with high altitude and fast flow. And they differed from impaired streams in nutrients concentrations and physical instream environments. Indicator species analysis exclusively identified several indicator taxa occurring only in reference streams; Cymbella delicatula, Cymbella japonica, Cymbella lacustris, Cymbella tumida, Diatoma mesodon, Rhoicosphenia abbreviata, Tabellaria flocculosa. Compared TDI (Kelly 1998) for the sensitivity and indicator values with 52 genera and 95 species reaching over 5% occurring frequency in 2877 samples from 720 sites in this study, there were 14 out of 60 taxa with the same sensitivity and 5 taxa in accordance with indicator value. Applied amended sensitivity and indicator values of the index (TDIm) to all study sites, TDIm values showed significant differences among 5 groups classified with PO4-P concentration. Also the correlation between TDIm values and environmental parameters (altitude, current velocity, BOD, PO4-P, TN, TP) considerably increased, compared with other diatom indices (TDI, DAIpo, SPI). These results indicate considerable variation of diatom ecology in the different geographic range, and thus nutrient sensitivity and occurrence of diatoms should to be carefully considered in assessing biological water quality.
