The text of Shakespeare's was first introduced in Korea by Hyeon Cheol through the journal of 『Gaebyeok』in the early days of the 1920s. But its full-fledged whole-curtain performance was directed by Lee Hae-rang, at the Kinema Theater in Daegu, on September, 1951, during the Korean War. Since then, diverse performances have been directed by many performing artists and groups in the 1960s ~ the 1990s. In this study, the investigator selected such 5 artists as Lee Hae-rang, An Min-su, Gi Guk-seo, Kim Jeong-ok and Lee Yun-taek who seemed to be the representatives of direction aesthetics in their time respectively, among the numerous performing artists in the history of performance of Shakespeare's in Korea over the period from the 1950s to the middle part of the 1990s. And the investigator examined the explanatory perspective of text presented in the above artists' direction of performance, the time-setting and aim of performance, the direction perspective of , the characteristics of stage presentation, the assessment of performance and the acceptance modality of audience. This approach seems to be meaningful in that it provides the clue of studies on the whole area of performance, such as literary trend, aesthetics and stage modalities, that took the lead in the contemporary perspectives, by going beyond the aspect of simple discussing of personal theatrical philosophies and performance modalities. The five artists of Lee Hae-rang, An Min-su, Gi Guk-seo, Kim Jeong-ok and Lee Yun-taek, discussed in this study, have presented with their unique performance grammar and modality, since the 1950s. Lee Hae-rang attached great importance to the perspective of realism, play and stage ensemble, namely his lifetime theatrical philosophy of the Western modern plays, he firsthand experienced and learned from his overseas study in Tokyo in the 1930s. An Min-su attempted the prospective stage presentation with a new performance language, from the perspective of adaptation and cultural mutualism, based upon the experimental performance modalities of Oriental and Occidental plays, he experienced through his overseas study and activity at the Hawaii University in the United States in the 1950s ~ 1960s. Gi Guk-seo pursued a challenging stage language that aiming at the exceptional deconstruction and contemporaneity by approaching with the perspective of contemporary political and social perception of problems. Experiencing the Western avant-garde performance and movie in the 1950s and 1960s, during his overseas study in France, Kim Jeong-ok reconstructed by preserving the literary value of original text via the workshop-oriented group creative method and the montage-like dramatic composition. In addition to it, he borrowed Korean-style shamanism as a stage language and then invented the third methodology and theatricality through the collision of Oriental and Occidental culture. And Lee Yun-taek also tried to establish the identity of new Korean play that comprising the universality of modern play and the nature of global performance, based on his own independent performance grammar and modality. From the perspective of his own independent perception of deconstruction and merrymaking, he reconstructed , thus aiming at a new modality of performance. As above, every performing artist attempted his own explanation and stage presentation of from his own unique perspective of performance aesthetics. Therefore, the explanation, direction perspective, stage presentation characteristic and performance aim of of the same text were different by various factors, such as artists' personal values and aesthetical perspective, time setting and so on. In addition to the characteristics and perspectives, derived from the research and analysis on the performance of 5 representative performing artists in the history of performance of in Korea, the investigator paid attention to the perspectives presented by the Cultural Vision 2000 Commission, at the point of time that aiming a new century, as the future modality of artistic changes: (1) the modality of changes that would derive from the development of digital technology (informationalization); (2) the modality of changes that would derive from a simultaneous progress of globalization and localization (glocalization); and (3) the extinction modality of all the borders or bisection methods between artistic genres in a narrow sense, between high-class culture and low-class culture, and between art and life in a broad sense. Based on study findings, the investigator tried to present the orientation and future task of studies on the history of performance as follows: First, as for the primary orientation of studies on the history of performance: (1) it is necessary to carry out thorough discussions on future-oriented texts as a continuous direction of study, in order to prepare for the advent of informationalized and pluralized texts; (2) it is necessary to establish the characteristics of performance aesthetics and stage presentation invented by artistic movements or new type performances, which can be formed with the new current of politics, society and culture and the mingling and combination of genres, as the theme and subject of many-sided studies; and (3) it is necessary to continuously work out database for the up-gradation, popularization and strategic plan of performance, together with basic data on studies. Second, as for the future task of studies in order to concretize above orientations: (1) it is necessary to assort various texts of performance and construct data in relation to the phenomena of informationalization, popularization and pluralization in the 21st century; (2) it is necessary to activate the working out of database for the materials of performance, variously produced by the use of multimedia, video culture and advanced Internet technology; (3) as a strategy of coping with the participation and conscious change of audience, it is necessary to carry out researches or hold seminars in relation to the performance aesthetics and methodologies that can generate the up-gradation and popularization of performance simultaneously; and (4) it is necessary to accumulate the basic data of research through the endless collection, study and analysis of new and old materials. The investigator hopes a variety of studies and researches will be carried out in the future on the basis of the multi-sided studies on various themes and mutually connected genres in relation to the prospective studies on the history of performance, together with practical discussions on the performance, which were handled in this study.
