Today's consumers express their complains via the Internet and media sources. One of the recent issues among the consumers was how snacks are over-packed which has also raised concerns about waste of resources and excessive packaging wastes. The most basic way to solve the problem is to avoid unnecessary packaging, which is, in other words, to minimize the packaging. Since most of foods are purchased in shingle use packaging this certainly increases the packaging waste. The most common single use packaging is a cup noodle container and the cup noodles are sold in a great volume everyday. After eating the noodles, people leave ingredient remains in the container. These hard and big containers are always a problem because it is difficult to dispose. In the past, the cup noodles containers were manufactured in blowing styrole. However, as the society became more conscious about the environmental hormone since 1999 emphasizing the importance of recycling, the material was replaced with a paper to protect nature. This showed that manufacturers who concentrated on production only began to take needs of the consumers. The new movement in the market has initiated an original structural research and development of the paper cup noodles container. This attempt is also expected to bring about many other developments in the future. The study first reviewed the circumstance of the packaging waste and second, carried out an empirical analysis on the structural design of the cup noodles container to figure out ways to reduce the packaging waste. Chapter 1 of the study talked about the background of the research as well as purposes and research methods. In Chapter 2, the circumstance of the packaging waste was summarized with information gained from domestic/overseas literature, data reports and web-sites. Did this chapter not only discuss the basic definition of the packaging waste, ways to handle the problem and other related data but also reviewed the package designs for the waste reduction through consideration of the over-packaging based on knowledge learned from case researches. Chapter 3 conducted another case researches on the existing cup noodles container. Actual researches for on-sale cup noodle products were carried out by visiting stores and purchasing the products. The study also used KIPRIS to know about intellectual property rights. Reasons for the container improvement were also determined through analyses on the packing materials and structure. The improvement was decided to be carried out based on three development concepts which are 'reducing of the container size as not touching the original form of the container, reducing the size into a shape of quadrangle and creating a very new container with portability maximized.' Based on the concepts, Chapter 4 worked on the structural design of the cup noodles container according to the structural design process. The item actually made of polyethylene-laminated paper so that the material property could be tested. As to the material property tests, the study adapted JAS to see the thermal resistance, the heat insulation and the water-proofing qualities of the container. For the thermal resistance, hot water was poured into the container for 15 minutes to find out any changes of the shape. The outer appearance was photographed. For the heat insulation, the external temperature was measured by contactless infrared thermometer. To test the water-proofing qualities, hot water was again put into the container for 60 minutes to see any water leakages. Problems discovered from the material property test were worked on to improve the structural designs and 6 ideas were newly offered in consequence. Each idea was gone through with the material property tests based on JAS before the item was finally proved to be appropriate as a cup noodles container. All the structures were developed in consideration of how to reduce the total volume (height) of the cup noodles container. The structural design proposed by the study is expected to reduce distribution costs as the load rates increases and then to decrease environmental load caused by reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions. However, despite such advantages, there might be many problems to apply the newly designed cup noodles containers to the modern society. First of all, the consumers need to adapt themselves to the new container which would feel inconvenient at first. Second, companies may see, in the beginning, that making new cup noodles containers is a waste of finance since the work would cost them additional money on development of manufacturing facilities. Nevertheless, once they take time to think what would bring people the biggest convenience and benefits they will eventually figure out that it is nature that gives humans such things. Now the companies should start to aim at activities that concern the environment, sublating to make profits without consideration of nature. In addition, for package designers, it is time to think about the packaging structural design along with the surroundings, taking a profound interest in the packaging waste. The study would be a great success if many designers are inspired by the new cup noodles container proposed in the study, learning how important it is to develop a design in an attempt to solve the environmental issues.
