This study was designed to analyze characteristics of spatial composition to understand problems in planning of spaces of the existing domestic crematory facilities and to propose architectural planning development plans. To achieve this research purpose, this study was conducted as follows. First, the appearance and the present state of crematory history were theoretically investigated, based on a proper understanding of crematory history and spaces of crematory facilities. Second, various-formed spaces of domestic crematory facilities were typologically examined, as there is a lack of certain architectural criteria for crematory facilities at this point in time. Then, standards for a case study were established, based on this approach. Third, based on the analytical framework established through the previous examination and classification of types, spaces of crematory facilities in Korea and Japan were considered and compared with the overall results of the analysis. According to the results of this study, a crematory facility's types could be divided depending on complex composition methods of crematory, cinerary, funeral facilities and others, and again, they could be divided into an independent type, a partially separate type, a completely separate type, and an eclectic type, depending on the combination or the separation of unit building. In addition, they could be classified into a circulating type and a straight-line type, depending on the arrangement of rooms, and then could be classified into a corridor access type, a hall type, a horizontal type, and a vertical type in more detail, according to approach methods. Based on these results, considerations for a crematory facility's main areas were suggested, from design perspectives. There have been lots of difficulties in conducting this research, since there are few case studies on crematory facilities that truly deserve to be analyzed from architectural and planning viewpoints. Therefore, this study will provide the data necessary for establishing design criteria of Korean-style crematory facilities in the future.
