Allergic rhinitis is one of the common diseases, causing chronic pain. The number of patients suffering from allergic rhinitis has steadily increased due to the environmental pollution and the westernization of Korean diet. Even with several kinds of treatments, relapses are common to allergic rhinitis. It leads to social and economic harm with the degradation of life quality and the increase of medical expenses. To overcome the limits of medication for allergic rhinitis such as side effects of the drug and the recurrence, the laser process is regarded as a promising form of therapy. Since the domestic demand depends heavily on imports, it is desperately in need of fundamental and application work on therapeutic apparatus using laser. To complement the existing laser apparatus and drug treatment, a new therapeutic apparatus is developed using 650 nm low power (5 mW) laser which is harmless to the nasal mucous membrane and the human body. It consists of high-speed battery charger, voltage transformer, CPU controller, control module to acquire constant voltage and constant current, firmware, and MP3 player module. The high-speed battery charger uses MCP 73831 chip to recharge Li-polymer battery at very high speed. The voltage transformer is designed to maintain voltage output at 5 V stably using MCP 1640 even with very low voltage input. It can operate with the wide range of input voltage from 0.65 to 5.5 V. The control module to maintain constant voltage and constant current utilizes TC 2185(LDO) to modulate the laser output at 650 nm. The output voltage and current of the laser are respectively DC 3.3 V and 150 mA. Firmware and CPU controller is designed to compensate the output voltage using AT89C2051 when the output voltage is out of operation range. The firmware is stored in 2 kB memory. It controls time setting, and displays operation time using number indicator. To realize low-power consuming system, it is programmed to stop system when it pauses for 10 seconds. The CPU drives LDO(TC 2185, DC 3.3 V) to operate laser. It runs diode laser (650 nm) by pulse signal through TR A1270. The CPU generates multi-frequency signal to maximize the curative power. Laser beam is periodically irradiated at 17 frequencies(4 Hz, 145 Hz, 10 Hz, 136 Hz, 23 Hz, 24 Hz, 47 Hz, 53 Hz, 101 Hz, 224 Hz, 269 Hz, 350 Hz, 378 Hz, 419 Hz, 454 Hz, 464 Hz, and 20.183 kHz). The effects of laser irradiation on the mucous membrane are the vitalization of cellular tissue and the removal of antigen causing allergic rhinitis. To provide a strong synergy effect on treatment, the MP3 player is added. It is equipped with ATJ 3310(8 mA) and 2 GB NAND flash memory which can be expanded up to 32 GB. With the USB connector, it can communicate with PC, and be rechargeable with DC 5 V. In the control switch, there are several function buttons such as START, STOP, PREVIOUS, NEXT, and Volume UP & DOWN. Using a 0.5 W stereo amplifier, high quality audio is realized with 128 kbps. Although the clinical demonstration has not been performed in this study, the preliminary results of the developed PCB circuits and control system can be utilized as a basic database to develop a therapeutic apparatus for allergic rhinitis. As future works, it is necessary to enhance the battery's available time with the compact design of therapeutic apparatus, and to develop the module to boost the battery charge efficiency.
