This paper aims to lay the foregrounds for clinical application of the Muja(繆刺) and Geoja(巨刺) methods used in diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the meridian and collaterals, in the perspective of external invasion of the pathogenic gi(邪氣). The contents ‘左治右, 右治佐’, '奇邪 and 血絡’, 'Geoja(巨刺) and the three positions and nine indicators(三部九候)' were examined firsthand, then treatment methods were organized based on these contents. ① Most of the patients that visit the local clinic suffer from musculoskeletal system disorder, making its diagnosis and treatment crucial. The form(形) of our body is nurtured and managed through the meridians and collaterals(經絡), which is why it is the key in understanding and treating the symptoms of the form(形). With this in mind, the diseases of the meridian and collaterals were approached in the perspective of ‘exterior pathogen theory(外因論)’. The Muja(繆刺) and Geoja(巨刺) methods presented in the 『Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)』 are appropriate means of treatment within this perspective, as they directly eliminate the external pathogenic gi in the meridian and collateral(經絡). ② The Muja(繆刺) and Geoja(巨刺) methods aim for unilateral or mobile symptoms of meridian and collateral(經絡) diseases. These diseases caused by external pathogens present different symptoms according to the location of the pathogenic gi(邪氣). ③ The two methods are distinguished by several points, such as the change of pulse according to where the pathogenic gi(邪氣) is located, depth of needle in acupuncture, prognosis, etc. ④ This paper will first review the definition, pathogenic factors and mechanisms of the Muja(繆刺) and Geoja(巨刺) methods. Then it will examine the ‘左治右, 右治左’, ‘奇邪and 血絡’, and 'the relationship between the Geoja(巨刺) method and the three positions and nine indicators(三部九候)'. Based on these contents, it will organize the diagnosis and treatment methods of Muja(繆刺) and Geoja(巨刺) to assist practitioners in diagnosing the disease and choosing the location of treatment. The contents of the Muja(繆刺), Geoja(巨刺) and the three positions and nine indicators(三部九候) were based on the texts of 『Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)』, while their meanings and application methods were reviewed in reference to annotations and other related sources of reference.
