This study examined brand boredom through positive and negative associations with the brand according to whether the product it is hedonic or utilitarian. Therefore, considering the grounds for boredom that were presented in the existing literature, this study revealed that customers feel boredom in the brands as well as in the products, and that the degree of influence of the brand boredom is different for the kinds of products according to the positive and negative brand associations. In addition, the study found that, with high-involvement products, brand boredom resulting from negative influence on preference lowers the customer’s preference for that brand. Lastly, for customers who are very sensitive to boredom, the study showed that brand boredom is more prevalent among utilitarian products than hedonic products when the brand has negative associations. Brand associations evaluated as favorable by consumers determine their positive attitudes towards the brand, while brand associations evaluated as negative will establish negative attitudes. It was expected that customers’ feeling towards brands will be different according to how they associate with the brand. In particular, it was expected that boredom, which is a kind of negative state, would be bigger when the customers have negative association with the brand. In addition, it was expected that brand boredom perceived by consumers from negative or positive associations with brand will differ depending on the type of products. For brands with positive associations, brand boredom is expected to be more prevalent when hedonistic products are involved rather than utilitarian products. In turn, for brands with negative associations, brand boredom is expected to be more prevalent when utilitarian products are involved rather than hedonistic products. According to the test results, in the case of high-involvement products, for brands with positive associations, brand boredom was more prevalent among hedonistic products than utilitarian products; while for brands with negative associations, brand boredom was more prevalent among utilitarian products than hedonistic projects. Meanwhile, in the case of low-involvement products, brand boredom, either from negative or positive associations, did not show significant difference depending on the type of products. In addition, in the case of high-involvement products, consumer’s awareness of boredom, either from positive or negative associations, had a negative effect on preference, albeit this result was not found in the case for low-involvement products. With respect to the hypothesis that brand boredom among consumer groups with high sensitivity to boredom and low sensitivity to boredom will differ depending on the type of products, the test result indicated brand boredom according to type of products varied significantly only among the consumer group with high sensitivity to boredom. In the case of consumer group with high sensitivity to boredom, consumers’s brand boredom for brands with negative associations were more effected by utilitarian products rather than hedonistic products. The results of this study imply that, in competitive situations where various brands are launched in the market, companies must continuously find ways to attract customers' interests or to implant new stimulations so that the customers would not switch to other brands after feeling boredom from repeated use of their brands. There has been expansive and active research conducted on brand switching focusing on the problem of new products. However, little has been studied on brand boredom, which is one of the causes of brand switching. Therefore, this study is significant not only in that it fills the gap in studies related to brand switching but also in that the results of the study revealing that brand boredom is effected by types of products as well as differing associations attached to the brand provide companies involved in marketing brand products practical data with which they can improve their marketing strategies.
