Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are promising for displays as well as for solid-state lighting due to their simple and low cost fabrication process and large area display applications. Very recently, blue phosphorescence approaching the theoretical efficiency has been achieved. However, high driving voltage and short lifetime still remain crucial issues. Consequently, investigations on soluble materials, film characteristics of solution process, and device structures are very important and still open issues. We demonstrated low voltage driving and highly efficient blue phosphorescence organic light emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) by soluble process using small molecule mixed host system. The mixed host with a blue dopant, which possesses good solubility and morphological uniformity without crystallization issues, has energetically negligible charge trapping situation by dopant molecules and high carrier mobility characteristics for holes and electrons. Moreover high triplet energy and deep HOMO level of electron transporting layer can confine all triplet excitons inside EML. As a result, we achieved a driving voltage as low as 5.4 V (at 1000 cd/m2) with a maximum current efficiency of 25.1 cd/A and a maximum quantum efficiency of 14.6% in the optimized solution processed blue PHOLEDs. We also investigate the intrinsic degradation mechanisms of the prototypical phosphorescent emissive material FIrpic by separately evaluating the effects of exciton and unipolar current. First, we evaluated stability of EML materials against exciton by irradiating the EML film with UV light and comparing a decrease in PL efficiency with the irradiation dose. At the same time, we measured the UV-visible absorption spectrum of the EML film and checked the change in absorption intensity to determine the degree of decomposition of the EML materials. Using the Ir(ppy)2acac film as a reference, we examined the rate of decrease in PL intensity of films made of different materials compared with the UV dose. Observing Ir(ppy)2acac film and FIrpic film for 1800 min, while the luminescence of Ir(ppy)2acac decrease by 23.7%, that of FIrpic decrease by 11.8%. As a result, Firpic is relatively stable under UV Irradiation compare with Ir(ppy)2acac. Second, we also evaluated the causes of molecular degradation in the phosphorescent emissive materials of FIrpic by using different combinations of unipolar current injection. We assumed that degradation products that act as deep traps are shown to produce changes in its driving voltage at constant current. From comparison between Ir(ppy)3 and FIrpic dopant’s variation of voltage as electrical stress, we find evidence for instabilities in the electron current of FIrpic dopant. This result mainly related to the chemical dissociation of the FIrpic molecules used to phosphorescent emitter. Based on the chemical dissociation process of FIrpic, the formation of iridium complexes between different FIrpic fragments and surrounding materials may contribute to the degradation process of the OLED. We successfully made low voltage driving and highly efficient blue phosphorescence organic light emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) by soluble process and also researched degradation mechanism of FIrpic dopant.
