This study was conducted to examine the direction of effective nutrition education through ‘no leftover day’ and obtain basic data that help the improvement of students' right dietary habits, by figuring out the general satisfaction with school foodservice on ‘no leftover day’ and the effects of this program on change of students' dietary habits in elementary schools for the qualitative improvement of ‘no leftover day’ as a way to reduce the increase of school food waste. To achieve this, a survey was carried out on students in the upper grades(4~6th grades) of 3 elementary schools located in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. The findings of this study are summarized as follows. The ‘no leftover day’ program had only a little effect on the dietary behavior by gender or dietary habit in some students, and was not a big factor. But they tried to eat all the foods when providing school foods, and thought ‘no leftover day’ itself as generally positive. In other words, the operating ‘no leftover day’ may correct students' dietary habits or unbalanced diet. Students wanted to know the reason not to leave leftover because they had a lot of interest in school foodservice. But the conditions for them to receive a education are inadequate. They wanted nutritionists to teach about general nutrition education and ‘no leftover day’ in the classroom. But it is now really hard for our nutritionists to educate students in the classroom. To begin with, the interest-induced education should be provided through a link between environment and food with after-school activities at school. And as it is difficult to provide students with the education only in school, the education for their parents should be also practiced so that they can't have an unbalanced diet and leave their food at home as well as at school. As nutrition education is also provided through school newsletters and homepage, it is necessary to support so that the effect of the education is linked even at home.
