Since the ancient times in China, actors had performed in the court as well as before civilians, and their theatrical arts comprehended various genres including satiric plays edifying through peculiar appearances, humors, songs and dances and satires, plays mimicking characters and situations, and verbal plays mimicking sounds. In Korea as well, actors performed comic dramas actively and records from the Unified Shilla Dynasty through the Chosun Dynasty show that their types were similar those in China. This fact proves that the theatrical culture of Sanakbaekheui (traditional composite art play) common in East Asia influenced also Korean theatrical arts. In this paper, Chapter II categorized Chinese and Korean comic dramas, and compared commonalities and differences in their comic dramas of similar form and theme. First, Chinese comic dramas were categorized into three types, which are comic dramas using funny physical appearance, satirizing, and mimicking Chapter III examined the tradition of comic dramas observed in the comic production of Korean mask dramas from the aspects of satirizing and mimicking. The comic production of mask dramas is closely related with satirizing comic dramas in contents, and with mimicking comic dramas in the characters’ appearances, motions and voices. Banin people who performed comic dramas as actors were skillful in satirizing and character mimicking, which are the elements of comic drama, so they might utilize such talents in mask dramas. In satires on yangbans (noble people) in mask dramas, the satirized objects were mainly yangbans’ funny appearance, and the unjust acts of yangbans as the ruling class, and the vulgar scholarship of yangbans as Confucian scholars. Funny appearance, which itself was an element of comics, was depicted by the appropriate combination of masks, costumes, properties and motions rather than by the peculiarity of physical appearance. Satires on the vulgar scholarship of yangbans as Confucian scholars coincided with the theme of Confucian comics (儒戱: comic drama satirizing Confucian scholars) and revealed through word plays as shallow as the level of servant Malddugi that yangbans’ sense of hierarchical superiority was false. Satires on the unjust acts of yangbans as the ruling class coincided with the theme of comic dramas satirizing corrupt officials. Satires on Buddhist monks used the caricature of their physical appearance, and basic sutra chanting was satirized comically through word plays. In addition, Buddhist monks’ secular desires violating religious precepts were also satirized. This study examined mimicking observed in mask dramas, dividing it into character mimicking emphasizing specific physical appearances, character mimicking of different genders and age groups, mimicking of specific classes, mimicking of animals, and mimicking of multiple characters. In particular, the mimicking of yangbans in mask dramas not only copied the common characteristics of the mimicked figures but also added features unfit for the class for more effective satirization by revealing inner natures. The mimicking of Buddhist monks showed extraordinary features emphasizing the negative natures of the satirized objects rather than revealing stereotypes. These findings suggest that mask dramas are based on the mimicking of comic dramas but of a more developed form.
