This study tries to seize both durability and variation in Park Mokwol’s poems and investigates the aspect of modernity of his poems through concrete analysis and examination on his major works. This study has a standpoint that the aspect of modernity is involved deeply in his works from earlier days, though the material and the emotion changed, and that feature reflects consistently modernity which starts from nature and imagism and gets joined on reality and truth-seeking transcendence. There seems to be little discourse on the modernity in Park’s poems. This is due to the existing studies that agrees to the folkways of Park's poems and constantly considers it as a kind of anti-modernity. This tendency of studying has us remember him as a consummator of compact monotypic lyric poetry, a nature poet who embodies the sensible reality and metaphysical meanings of nature, and most of all, a member of Blue Deer School(Cheonglokpa), a school of nature poet. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the main evaluation of him is based on the earlier poems in his first poetic works, Blue Deer Book(Cheonglokjip). Park Mokwol is admitted as a poet who found the power of nature suppressed in the squalid nature, expressed it with specific image of poem, presented the modern daily lives in the confusion of his lifetime, and kept continuously the modern eye for poem owing to realizing that the religious sentiment is the core of the moderns' attitude and spirit. Overlooking these diverse features of his poems can result in the restriction of the discourse on the modernity of Korean poetry. So, this study aims to extend existing views that focus on the anti-modernity of Park’s poems by exploring the modernity of his poems. For this purpose, this study takes the view that embodying the nature, daily lives and religion, and using Gyeongsang province dialect, which is the very characteristics of Park’s poems, are the ways of expressing universal modernity by incorporating ‘the Other’ which represents the Western culture into traditional Korean sentiment, rather than an effort to stick with local culture. Taking that view, this study seeks to contradict existing views that harshly criticize Park’s poems as being silent over the times. Park’s poems can be divided into three phases according to its style: earlier works from his life in Gyeongju, mid-period works from his life in Seoul, and later works from his religious life that cover both earlier and later period. His earlier poems, contained in Blue Deer Book and Wild Peach Blossoms(Sandohwa), use delicate language and represents the imagism of local culture and nature. Mid-period works, contained in Orchids and Other Poems(Nan, Gita), and Clear and Cloudy(Cheongdam), expresse detailed modern life and the realization of love. Later works in Fallen Leaves in Gyeongsang province(Gyeongsang-doui garangnip), Musun, and A Big and Tender Hand expresse Christian truth-seeking spirit and religious enlightenment. Each phase is not clearly separated from each other, but only represents different style of modernity that exists in Park’s life and his works. Park’s earlier works realize modernity through imagism of nature. Blue Deer Book is an important collection of poetry since it represents the starting point of Park’s modernity. Moreover, the imagism found in this collection is continued in Park’s poems written after Blue Deer Book, and further intensified in his later works. Park’s mid-period works show the actual and hard situations of a head of household, and more intensified modernity. Park’s perception of the reality changes in this period and his poems also shift in style. Orchids and Other Poems and Clear and Cloudy of this period are based on his realization of life and love. Park faces his real life when he comes out from the nature of Gyeongju where he was born and grew into the human world which was represented as Wonhyo street in Seoul. The turbulent era of the Korean War changed his poems in style. Unlike his earlier works, Park’s poems no more maintain standard rhythm. Park took plain daily lives as subjects and unified the lives in his poems and in his real life. Park’s later works show his ontological awareness of modernity. Fallen Leaves in Gyeongsang province, Musun which expresses ‘spiritual aristocratism’ and esthetics of soul, and A Big and Tender Hand, his posthumous work, and a collection of non-included poems are of this period. “Sarokjil” is a series of poems and represents characteristics of this period. These poems, rooted in deep abstraction and idea, are based on the nihilistic philosophy and spiritual awakening through contemplation on the extinction and destruction of men and things. In other words, they turn to modern lyricism from classical oriental spirit. This truth-seeking transcendence has been interpreted as metaphysical sublimation of modernity to this day. Park Mokwol is one of the most well-known poets, but also one of the most underestimated poets. That is because his style of seeking pure literature has been underestimated in 1970s and 1980s when there was emphasis on the social and ethical responsibility of Korean literature. Therefore, analyzing the modernity in Park’s poems is extending the existing views that focus on anti-modernity of his poems and it is making him one of the representative poets in Korea. Furthermore, this study can provide an opportunity to analyze Korean modern poetry more in detail and to reevaluate Park Mokwol’s works which have not drawn deserving attention.
