Tin alkoxide catalysts have been investigated as potential catalysts for lactide polymerization, because they could solve the depolymerization problem resulted by the carboxyl acid group of the first generation catalyst. In practical point of view, it would be desirable to heterogenize the homogeneous tin alkoxide catalysts for the better process control and the easier separation of catalysts from the product. In this work, silica supported catalysts were prepared by reacting Sn(OBu)2 with pretreated silica. Lactide polymerization was conducted with silica supported tin butoxide catalysts in various polymerization conditions. The effect of the polymerization process parameters on the catalytic activity and characteristics of the produced PLA was investigated from the experimental results.
A series of bulk polymerization of lactide with homogeneous (Sn(OBu)2) and silica supported catalysts were performed to compare the characteristics of the homogeneous and silica supported catalysts. The supported catalysts showed the higher conversion and catalytic activity than those of the homogeneous catalyst at each monomer/catalyst molar ratio, except for Sn content of 1.41 wt%. And the produced PLA with silica supported catalysts showed similar or a little higher molecular weight, PDI, and melting temperature than those with homogeneous catalyst.
The effect of reaction temperature on the conversion of the lactide polymerization was examined. The polymerization with homogeneous and silica supported catalysts showed similar reaction behaviors with respect to the reaction temperature. Sn supported catalyst showed the highest value of kp and molecular weight at 180 ℃ when Sn was supported by 3.03 wt%.
One of advantages in the heterogeneous catalytic process is that the solid catalysts can be recovered from the polymer products. It facilitates the production of highly pure grade of PLA and the recycle of catalysts. In this work, the spent catalyst was separated successfully by filtration of product mixture with various solvents after the polymerization. It was observed that about 90 % of catalyst could be recovered with chloroform as a solvent from the polymer product. The recovery efficiency was closely related to the differences in solubility parameter between polymer and solvents. It is expected that the recycle of catalyst and highly pure, metal-free grade of PLA can be produced with the heterogeneous catalyst system.
